What’s his deal?

McClellan was the third receiver commit for the 2024 class along with Mylan Graham and Jeremiah Smith, but that certainly doesn’t mean he should be thought of as an afterthought.

He’s got great ball skills and good speed, and can enter Ohio State as a wideout ready to prove he can, if not settle into a consistent role, prove he belongs at the Big Ten level. An athletic player who can play in both the slot and on the outside, he’s got the necessary skills to make an impact.

For most programs in the country, McClellan would be the top receiver recruit headed into a program. For Ohio State, per the composite rankings, he’s the third. But he’s still got a great chance to make an impact down the line.

How he fits into Ohio State’s plans

He’ll have to compete in the best recruited wide receiver room in the country.

The Buckeyes recruit the wide receiver position like no other program in the country, and McClellan will have to fight for every possible rep he can get. As someone that can play on both the inside and outside, he should make himself remarkably valuable to an offense that has incredible competition for reps.

In terms of where he can play, he can seemingly fit into the Z, X or Y position.

Projections for 2024

Considering the talent that Ohio State has, and is bringing into the depth chart, it’s hard to confirm that he’ll have a role in the two-deep in 2024.

With Carnell Tate, Brandon Inniss, Kyion Grayes, Jayden Ballard, Kojo Antwi, Noah Rogers and Bryson Rodgers already on the roster, and Smith and Graham joining them, it’s remarkably hard to see valuable playing time as a true freshman. And that doesn’t consider the possibility of Emeka Egbuka returning for the 2024 season.

For McClellan, his role in 2024 should be about proving he can make a second-year jump to a major role in the 2025 season.
