Welcome to the October issue of Smart Manufacturing. This edition shines a light on trailblazers who are paving the way for new approaches to solve problems, address the skills gap, create career paths and tackle urgent issues facing U.S. manufacturing. Each article makes a case for why greater diversity in ideas, voices and backgrounds will make U.S. manufacturing more resilient and competitive.

In our cover story, “Women Leading in AM,” we profile 13 amazing ladies making an impact in additive manufacturing, smashing glass ceilings and creating a roadmap for others to achieve success. The feature “Neurodiverse Talent Brings New Perspectives to Manufacturing” highlights the untapped superpower of neurodiversity and provides prescriptive guidance to create cultures that embrace more inclusive hiring, training and retention processes.

The third feature, “Meet Your New Apprentice,” hones in on the value of mentorships to transition legacy knowledge and connect the multigenerational workforce. In our Manufacturing USA spotlight, you’ll learn how BioMADE is propelling new biotechnology products from the laboratory to the commercial market and creating a more resilient supply chain to help the U.S. become more self-sufficient.

And make sure to check out Voices AMplified, which features two pioneers in additive manufacturing: Chuck Hull, the father of 3D printing; and Joe Beaman, co-inventor of selective laser sintering (SLS). Without their significant contributions and game-changing innovations, we might not be able to share the other stories contained in this issue.

We’re also delighted to welcome SME’s new Vice President of Integrated Media Jake Volcsko, who brings a progressive perspective to the convergence of traditional and digital publishing. Look for Jake at an upcoming SME event and make sure to bend his ear about what you’d like covered in the months ahead. Until then, please enjoy.
