Did you feel that? Floods, tornados, earthquakes and power outages hit Northeast Ohio

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Thousands of people in Northeast Ohio are reeling after experiencing floods, tornadoes and even earthquakes in the past week.

The National Weather Service confirmed Monday that 11 tornadoes swept through Ohio.

On Cleveland’s East Side, a tornado, about 150 yards wide, created a path that was nearly a mile long. It began near East 71st Street and Chester Avenue and ended near East 89th Street and Euclid Avenue. The storm hit late Thursday.

In Mentor, another tornado passed through and created a path that was nearly 4 miles long.

Tornadoes also ripped through Elmore, Bristolville, Vermilion Township, Spencer, Warrensville Heights, Bedford Heights, Chardon, Middlefield, LaGrange and Bainbridge.

Brian Mitchell, an official with the weather service in Cleveland, said the storms developed in Southeast Michigan on Thursday night and pushed across Lake Erie to Northeast Ohio.

Wind and strong rains caused flooding across the area while thousands of people lost power. As of Monday afternoon, about 12,000 people were still without power as a result of the storms. Nearly 4 inches of rain fell in some parts of the region. The rainfall poured into basements and turned the Lorain County Fair into a large waterway.

The U.S. Geological Service said the region also experienced three earthquakes.

On Thursday, 2.3 magnitude quake occurred in Madison Township in Lake County near the Ashtabula County line.

At 10:30 p.m. Sunday, a 3.6 magnitude earthquake occurred just east of the original location. About 15 minutes later, a third earthquake hit.

Each earthquake occurred within five miles of the other one. Video from the moment the earthquake hit Sunday night shows how traffic cameras from the Ohio Department of Transportation were shaking, said Matt Bruning, a spokesman for the agency.
