What’s his deal?
Witten committed to Ohio State over the summer the day after he began his official visit.
The Ohio-product plays wide receiver for Glenville and is a true receiving threat. He’s got great speed and excellent high-point ability, making him an ideal weapon and a matchup problem for opposing defense.
He’s not a tight end in the traditional sense, where his blocking ability outweighs his ability as a receiver. In his case, he’s a unique body type that can play in a handful of roles. A standout basketball player too, he fits the mold of many talented tight ends that have come before.
How he fits into Ohio State’s plans
Just like how he plays the position, he’s a bit of a unique fit into the Ohio State offense.
He’s an explosive player that hasn’t put his hand in the dirt much, meaning that there’s a strong chance Ohio State uses him uniquely as well. Compared to the way that Cade Stover and Jeremy Ruckert have been used in the past, using Witten in that same way wouldn’t be maximizing his skills.
Obviously, Ohio State recruits the wide receiver position as well as anyone in the nation, which will make targets hard to come by. But the Buckeyes, when Witten is ready to see the field, will have to get creative for how they use him — because he’s the type of player that offenses covet.
Projections for 2024
He’ll be in a tight end room with Gee Scott, Jelani Thurman, Bennett Christian, Sam Hart and fellow freshman Max LeBlanc. And considering the level of adjustment there’ll be for Witten, seeing him in a role in 2024 is hard to envision.
Witten is listed at just 215 pounds, which would make it hard for him to see the field as a true freshman with his hand in the ground. And considering the learning curve that comes with the tight end position in general, there’s going to be some adjustments for Witten.
For context, Thurman had two catches in his freshman season, but is listed at 6-foot-6 and 258 pounds. Physically, he’s more ready for the demands of Big Ten football.
Still, it’s not hard to envision a time where the future doesn’t look incredibly bright for him.
