Cuyahoga County Sheriff Christopher Viland resigns after decades of service in law enforcement, spokeswoman says

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cuyahoga County Sheriff Christopher Viland resigned Friday, Cuyahoga County spokeswoman Mary Louise Madigan confirmed to cleveland.com and The Plain Seller.

Viland resigned for “private causes,” Madigan stated.

“We thank him for dedicating himself to public service, supporting, rising and coaching employees and dealing tirelessly to enhance the jail,” Madigan stated in an announcement. “He’ll stick with us by way of the tip of the month to make sure a seamless transition.”

Viland was appointed by Cuyahoga County Government Armond Budish in January 2021 and confirmed by Cuyahoga County Council in March 2021.

Earlier than turning into sheriff, Viland served as police inspector common for Cleveland’s Division of Public Security.

He additionally served with the Solon Police Division from 1987 to 2019, working in varied roles from patrol officer, detective, patrol sergeant, patrol lieutenant, detective lieutenant and chief.

Viland was the third everlasting sheriff since Budish took workplace in 2015. He changed former Sheriff Cliff Pinkney, who resigned in August 2019.
