Cleveland among Top 3 neediest cities in U.S., report says

The holiday season is here, which means it’s time for gift-giving and charitable donations to support loved ones and your local community.

Some cities, unfortunately, are needier than others and are plagued with a number of socioeconomic challenges, including poverty, homelessness, and hunger.

Cleveland, Ohio, is among those cities, ranking third among the neediest cities in the U.S., according to a report from WalletHub. Cleveland ranks behind only Brownsville, Texas, at second and Detroit, Michigan, which topped the list of neediest cities.

The report compared 182 U.S. cities based on two key categories comprised of a number of metrics: Economic well-being, such as child poverty rate, adult poverty rate, unemployment rate, homelessness rate, median credit score and more; and health & safety, including food insecurity rate, share of residents without health insurance coverage, crime rate and more.

By category, Cleveland ranked fourth-lowest in economic well-being and 10th-lowest in health and safety. By individual metric, Cleveland ranked third among U.S. cities in both child poverty and adult poverty.
