Mexican Wolf pups born at Chicago zoo to be cross-fostered in New Mexico

CHICAGO — Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo on Could 27 introduced that Mexican wolf pups born on the zoo had been despatched to New Mexico as a part of ongoing efforts to revive the species in its native habitat within the southwestern United States and Mexico.

Since 2003, the Chicago Zoological Society (CZS), which manages Brookfield Zoo, has been a companion within the multi-agency endeavor that goals to re-establish the Mexican wolf inhabitants in its native habitat within the southwestern United States and Mexico.

A complete of 5 pups have been born to Vivilette, a first-time mom, and her mate, nine-year-old Amigo, who arrived at Brookfield Zoo in 2020 and 2021, respectively, as a part of the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Mexican Wolf Restoration Plan, CZS stated in a press launch. Two of the pups have been staying on the zoo, and three have been going to hitch wild wolves in New Mexico, they stated.

“We’re very excited to proceed to be a part of this program, which is making strides to repopulate an iconic species that was as soon as extirpated within the wild,” stated Joan Daniels, senior curator of mammals for CZS.

Mexican wolves are the rarest subspecies of gray wolves in North America and, by 1976, have been listed as endangered below the Endangered Species Act. Like home canines, wolf pups are born deaf and their eyes are closed. At about two weeks outdated their eyes open, and every week or so later, they start to enterprise exterior the den.

Inside 14 days of whelping (being born), the captive-born pups get transported to the wild and blended along with wild pups of an analogous age, based on USFWS.
