Chicago-area police officer killed while responding to 'armed offender' at bank, suspect charged
A Chicago-area police officer died after being shot while responding to a “call involving an armed offender” seen leaving a bank, officials say.
The killing of Oak Park Police Detective Allan Reddins, 40, on Friday “marks the first Line of Duty death for the Oak Park Police Department since 1938,” the village said in a statement.
Hours later, a suspect was charged.
Jerell Thomas, 37, who has an “an extensive criminal background,” was charged with first-degree murder, police said.
“Our police department, we’re hurting right now,” Oak Park Police Chief Shatonya Johnson said at a news conference Friday. “I’m hurting. His family is hurting.”
Reddins, who joined the department in 2019, was one of several officers who confronted the suspect seen leaving a Chase Bank location, according to Johnson. When police asked the suspect to show his hands, he allegedly drew a gun and opened fire at Reddins.

“At 9:36 a.m., the Oak Park Fire Department responded to a call for shots fired in the 800 block of Lake Street in Oak Park. Upon arrival, firefighter/paramedics learned that an Oak Park Police Officer, Reddins, had been shot in the left side. He was transported to Loyola University Medical Center in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries at approximately 10:10 a.m.,” the Village of Oak Park said.
“The offender was shot in the leg,” it added. “He is in custody and is being treated at Loyola and is in stable condition.”

Johnson described Reddins as a “devoted father” who now leaves behind his 19-year-old son, mother and siblings.
She also called Reddins a “natural-born leader” who closed substantial cases during his time as a detective.

“I thought he would make a phenomenal field training officer as well, and I was looking very much forward to him becoming a sergeant,” Johnson added.

The Village of Oak Park says it “extends its deepest condolences to Detective Reddins’ family, friends and colleagues within the Oak Park Police Department and the wider law enforcement community as they process the grief caused by this senseless act of violence.”

MILWAUKEE – Garrett Mitchell and William Contreras homered, Jacob Misiorowski delivered another winning performance, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the rival Cubs 6-2 at American Family Field on Friday night.

Misiorowski (9-3) struck out eight over six innings and 105.5 mph, tied for the third-fastest since pitch tracking began in 2008. He allowed one earned run – a Seiya Suzuki home run in the fifth – on two hits but walked four. His earned run average for the season now sits at 1.45.

Milwaukee trailed 1-0 when Misiorowski threw his final pitch of the night, but Mitchell belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to put Miz in position for the win. David Hamilton made it 3-1 with a triple that scored Cooper Pratt later in the sixth.
Contreras added insurance with a two-run home run of his own in the seventh. Suzuki drove in Pete Crow-Armstrong with a sacrifice fly in the eighth to close the gap for Chicago, but Christian Yelich doubled home Pratt in the bottom half.
Abner Uribe pitched a scoreless seventh for his eleventh hold of the season, Aaron Ashby gave up the sac fly to Suzuki in the eighth and Trevor Megill walked one but worked a scoreless ninth.
Former Milwaukee pitcher Colin Rea pitched five innings in the start for Chicago, but Ethan Roberts was credited with both the loss and a blown save.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy, who had surgery Thursday for a ruptured disk in his back, guided his club from a safe spot near the dugout.

A 19-year-old man is injured after a shooting in north Minneapolis on Friday, according to police.
Officers responded to the incident on the 2600 block of North Humboldt Avenue at 5:03 p.m. Officials said they found the man inside a home with apparent gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening.
The officers provided medical aid before the man was taken to the hospital, police said.
According to investigators, the man was outside the home when shots were fired and ran inside after he was injured.
Police said Friday night that no arrests had been made and that they were working to learn what led to the shooting.
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A jogger heard splashing from the White River near the Indiana University Indianapolis campus on Friday night and called 911.
About an hour later, three divers with Indianapolis Fire Department found a man’s body about 15 feet from the shore, and six feet down, said Battalion Chief Rita Reith.
Crews were called just before 7 p.m. Friday to the intersection of University Boulevard and Blake Street. That’s near the National Institute for Fitness and Sport, and the NCAA Hall of Champions in downtown Indianapolis.
It was not immediately known why the man was near the river.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources will work to locate the man’s family.
IFD said this is the ninth fatal drowning in Marion County in 2026 and the second in two days.
