Interestingly, the study found that participants who were sufficiently active experienced a 10% reduction in COVID-19 infection and a 27% reduction in hospitalization compared to those who were inactive. Further, this protective influence of physical activity on COVID-19 appears to be stronger in females.

It’s important to note that this study is observational, relying on self-reported data, which can introduce bias. Therefore, further investigation is required to extrapolate these results to various demographic groups.

High Physical Activity and Lower COVID-19 Risk

The study combined data from three ongoing prospective randomized clinical trial cohorts, with participants averaging 76 years of age. While the research highlights the potential protective role of physical activity against COVID-19, it is vital to acknowledge its limitations, chiefly its observational nature and the use of self-reported data. The research team’s future plans include a more comprehensive exploration of physical activity’s association with other aspects of health and well-being, such as depression and social connectedness.

A study conducted in Spain, for instance, showed that physical activity levels among those with multiple sclerosis decreased during the pandemic, a shift that could potentially increase health risks. A notable observation was that over a third of the participants who initially met the World Health Organization’s physical activity recommendation no longer did so during the restrictions.

In response to the pandemic’s effects on physical activity levels, online supervised group physical and mental health rehabilitation programs have shown promise. A study evaluating such a program found significant improvements in health-related quality of life, depression, fatigue, and pain interference compared to usual care. This suggests that leveraging technology could be a viable solution to encourage physical activity amidst pandemic restrictions.
