Disney Plus Hotstar has now come up with the film Apurva, which stars Tara Sutaria in the lead role. Let’s see how the film is.

Story:

Apurva (Tara Sutaria), hailing from Gwalior, decides to surprise her fiance Sidharth (Dhairya Karwa) on his birthday. Sidharth is a bank employee working in Agra. When Apurva is traveling on a bus to Agra, a group of goons attack the bus driver just because he didn’t let them pass the bus. The goons kill the driver and start looting the passengers. Apurva refuses to give her mobile to them, and the goons abduct her. How she manages to escape from the goons forms the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

Tara Sutaria is known for her glamorous roles, but she will surely surprise one and all with her excellent performance in Apurva. She played a role that was very challenging, but Tara Sutaria has pulled it off with finesse. When she revolts, the audience is sure to cheer for her.

A woman landing in unexpected trouble and fighting against the odds all by herself is what the film is about. Apurva’s basic idea is pretty good, and in one way, it can be said that the movie is inspirational for women to fight dangerous battles with bravery.

Abhishek Banerjee is impactful as always. Rajpal Yadav, Sumit Galati, and Aaditya pass muster. The movie is just about 90 minutes, and the film runs at a very fast pace.

Minus Points:

The main drawback of Apurva is that the film is predictable right from the beginning, which shouldn’t be the case for a survival thriller. We can guess the scenes from miles away, and this takes out the excitement.

The tension is not maintained throughout, and the characters apart from Tara Sutaria are underdeveloped. We are shown very little about the antagonists, and it would have been better if the other characters were shown in a detailed manner.

The protagonist’s backstory doesn’t have the desired impact, as Dhairya Karwa’s role isn’t written well. Apurva also reminds us of films like NH10 and Highway in a few scenes. The VFX works during the climax scene are shoddy.

Technical Aspects:

Vishal Mishra’s music is decent. Cinematographer Anshuman Mahaley has superbly captured the dilapidated locations. The camera movements during the chase sequences were top-notch. The editing is neat, and so are the production values.

Director Nikhil Nagesh Bhat has chosen a very good point, but the narrative lacks the desired thrills. Tara Sutaria’s remarkable performance and the central theme are the biggest strengths of Apurva, which keep the film going.

Verdict:

On the whole, Apurva is a well-intentioned survival thriller, but the predictability factor plays the spoilsport. Tara Sutaria performed to the best of her ability and is a revelation in this survival thriller. Had there been more tense moments and had the writing been sharp, the film could have gone to the next level. Apurva’s theme and short runtime make it a passable watch this weekend.
