Knicks Hope to Be in Pacers’ Shoes

The New York Knicks hope to do what the Indiana Pacers were able to accomplish this past season by winning the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Pacers stunned the Knicks in six games to advance to the NBA Finals, where they pushed the champion Oklahoma City Thunder to a Game 7 despite losing star point guard Tyrese Haliburton to a torn Achilles midway through the final matchup.

The Pacers should be different without Haliburton in the upcoming season, opening the door for the Knicks to take over as the top team in the East. Even though Haliburton won’t be on the court, the Pacers should still have a solid team.

Andrew Nembhard is expected to have significant duties as the team’s point guard while Bennedict Mathurin will likely be his partner in the backcourt.

Aaron Nesmith, who torched the Knicks throughout the entire Eastern Conference Finals, will likely be the team’s starting small forward. Pascal Siakam will be expected to lead the team in scoring from the power forward position while the team has question marks surrounding the center spot.

Myles Turner won’t be with the Pacers for the first time in a decade after he signed a contract with the division rival Milwaukee Bucks over the offseason, so the team needs to figure out what it will do to replace him.

“By far, the biggest question with the lineup is the center position. There is no guaranteed starter, although Isaiah Jackson is the favorite. Jay Huff and James Wiseman will likely back him up,” Indiana Pacers On SI contributor Ryan Stano wrote.

“There’s a chance that Indiana changes who they want to start at center at some point during the season, so that is a fluid spot. Tony Bradley will fight Wiseman for the third-string minutes.”

The Knicks should be favored over the Pacers during the season, but this is a team whose core was one win away from winning the championship just a few months ago.

Therefore, the Knicks have to take the Pacers seriously if they want to overtake them in the Eastern Conference hierarchy.

Indiana coach Curt Cignetti is receiving a raise that will bump his annual average salary to $13.2 million — the highest in college football — after leading the Hoosiers to the school’s first football national championship last month, school sources told The Athletic on Friday.

In October, Cignetti agreed to a new eight-year contract that runs through 2033. The deal raised his annual salary to an average of $11.6 million, which would be the third-highest nationally in 2025. The contract said Indiana was required to make a “good faith” effort to ensure Cignetti remained in the top three nationally in salary if the Hoosiers reached the College Football Playoff semifinals.

Cignetti and the Hoosiers did better than that, winning the national championship by going through Alabama, Oregon and Miami in the CFP.

Georgia’s Kirby Smart’s average annual salary is $13 million, and LSU signed new head coach Lane Kiffin to a seven-year deal that will pay him about $13 million per year. Ohio State coach Ryan Day makes over $12 million annually.

Cignetti, 64, is 27-2 in two seasons since taking over what was at the time the losingest program in major college football history.

His contract with IU is fully guaranteed unless Cignetti is fired for cause. The deal calls for a $15 million buyout to Indiana if Cignetti were to leave for another school, up from $10 million in his previous deal, the person briefed on the details said. The buyout is halved if school president Pamela Whitten or athletic director Scott Dolson leaves Indiana.

In 2024, Cignetti received an eight-year contract through 2032 and a significant raise to $8.3 million amid a 10-0 start to the season.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bub Carrington and Anthony Gill each scored 13 points and helped spark a decisive fourth-quarter run as the Washington Wizards outlasted the Indiana Pacers 112-105 on Thursday night.

Kadary Richmond and Jaden Hardy also had 13 points each as Washington snapped a three-game slide on a day it announced Trae Young is still at least a week from his team debut.

Bilal Coulibaly and Tristan Vukcevic scored 12 points each in the opener of a back-to-back set against the same opponent.

Jarace Walker scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Pacers, who fell to 2-3 during a season-long, six-game road trip wrapped around the All-Star break.

Taelon Peter added 16 points as Indiana fell a game behind Washington at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. Jay Huff and Ben Sheppard scored 15 each.

Pacers guards Kam Jones (back soreness) and Aaron Nesmith (ankle sprain) both left by halftime.

The Wizards led by 17 early in the third quarter before the Pacers responded with a 14-3 run to take a 92-91 lead early in the fourth.

Washington answered later with its own 14-0 run to put it away.

Carrington hit a 17-foot jumper and a 3-pointer from the top of the arc during the spurt. Gill started it with a layup, and finished it with a baseline 3-pointer that made it 110-97.

Chick-fil-A expansion brings play spaces for kids. Where they will be

play

There are good times to be had with upcoming Chick-fil-A store openings in Indiana, especially for kiddos.

A half-dozen new restaurants, like the one under construction in Beech Grove, will be offering inside play spaces, in addition to its sandwiches, waffle fries and lemonade, to draw families.

“We’re super excited. It’s like the newest version of the play place,” said Kevin Brown, owner-operator of the Beech Grove store.  “At Chick-fil-A, we are super committed to families. It’s in our DNA. So we are building our new restaurants with kind of the latest and greatest kids’ play place.”

Featuring a slide, oversized graphics and places for the coat and shoes of youngsters, the glassed-in two-level play space at Brown’s restaurant will be among the largest of Chick-fil-A restaurants in the Indianapolis area.

“It’s kind of like that analog fun. You’re not going to find screens in there. You’re going to find kind of good old-fashioned just climbing and sliding; that sort of thing,” said Brown, a former U.S. military officer who is relocating from the downtown Indianapolis store at 10 E. Washington.

He’s targeting March for the opening of the free-standing unit with a two-lane drive-through operation.

“The high school’s already reached out. They’re so excited, just like we are. They’re like, ‘Hey, how do we how do we create stronger bonds between the school and Chick-fil-A. Kids love Chick-fil-A, and we love kids; so the natural thing,” Brown said.

More Chick-Fil-A locations coming to Indiana

The Beech Grove store is among six locally-owned Chick-fil-A restaurants launching in Indiana in 2026, each with play areas unique to the locations.

A Kokomo store opened on Feb. 19. The Beech Grove store is targeting a March opening; a Franklin store is expected to open in the spring; and locations are planned for Bloomington, Plainfield and south Indianapolis later this year.

Chick-fil-A is exploring new prototype formats to better serve specific communities, with each restaurant designed to reflect its local neighborhood, the College Park, Georgia-based company said.

The play spaces in select restaurants are part of a commitment to creating family-friendly environments where customers can spend meaningful time together, in addition to dining, it said.

“For many families across the region, Chick-fil-A is more than a place to grab a meal. As we continue to expand across Indiana, we are focused on creating restaurants that feel welcoming and intentionally designed for families,” Mandy Brantley, senior area director for the Midwest region, said in a written statement. “Including play spaces in each of our new metro Indianapolis restaurants reflects our commitment to investing in spaces where children can engage, families can connect and communities can build meaningful memories together.”

New owner-operator Meg Puello, mom to nine-year old Nolan and seven-year–old Ana Kate, is familiar with the concept, on a couple of levels.

Puello worked for Greenwood Chick-fil-A locations operated by her father before training to own her own store in Franklin. She’s anticipating a late March or early April opening.

“At Chick-fil-A, they’re always striving to figure out what families and what the communities are needing. So I’m really thankful to have a playground and to be able to have a place that kids can come and play,” she said. “There are lot of neighborhoods around us. There are a lot of families. And I personally took my children to Chick-fil-A playgrounds on more occasions than I can count.”

“They love being able to spend time whenever we have the chance at our Chick-fil-A.”

Where is Chick-fil-A opening in Indiana in 2026?

The Indianapolis area currently has about 28 Chick-fil-A restaurants.

With each new restaurant, the company donates $25,000 to the Feeding America hunger relief organization for local efforts.

The additional six stores will add up to 600 new full- and part-time jobs.
