It’s time to see for yourself. America’s southern border. See if all the media and political hysteria is accurate.

Flying into San Diego provides the easiest way for most people around the U.S. to do so. Downtown sits 20 miles from Mexico and that country’s second largest city: Tijuana.

The pair want you to come–San Diego and Tijuana–to see how they work with, and around, the border. How they work together literally and figuratively.

How, in many ways, they are one city, not two.

“Our cities are inextricably linked, both economically and culturally,” Jonathon Glus, Executive Director of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture, told Forbes.com. “We acknowledge that we are one region; we’re embracing that more and more as both cities are evolving and maturing.”

One way both cities are striving to mature is through more thoughtful design. Toward that end, San Diego and Tijuana sought out recognition as the World Design Capital for 2024. Collaboratively. Successfully.

Every two years, the World Design Organization, a global nongovernmental organization with a mission to “design a better world,” designates a World Design Capital. The winning bidder is chosen for effective use of design in driving economic, social, cultural, and environmental progress. San Diego and Tijuana represent the first cross-border region to be designated World Design Capital and the first time a U.S. city has been selected for the prestigious distinction.

“This World Design Capital designation will allow us to show that there is more that unites us than divides us as we work together to tell the story of the seven million people who live and work here and as we partner on addressing the most pressing issues facing our region,” Tijuana Mayor Montserrat Caballero said when the selection was announced.

World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 will provide a yearlong platform to showcase design, while further enhancing cross-border collaboration and raising the profile of this binational region on the global stage.

“On a daily basis, once one comes here and spends time here, you start to learn about the subtleties of the shared cultures, but also, that in spite of that (border) wall, we dine in each other’s city every evening, we educate our children in each other cities, we share workforce–40,000 people cross the border on foot every day,” Glus, also a World Design Capital 2024 board member, added. “As a region, we’re embracing that there’s built in challenges to being the largest border region on the planet and we have this wall that goes right through the center of us. That’s a daily challenge for us, but we also believe that we’re the place that can find solutions to share with the rest of the world.”

Solutions, not separation.

“I don’t want to say it’s informal, but there is a less formal, seamless way that the region has figured out how to function economically in spite of the border, and we committed through WDC to raise the curtain on what that means, that dynamism,” Glus continued. “We have all the barriers of being in two countries, but that’s alright because we have access to resources that are unique to our region, and that’s what we’re building on.”

Brotherhood, not otherhood.

As for the big question many Americans will have before venturing from San Diego to Tijuana: is it safe?

“I personally travel across the border multiple times a week,” Glus said. “Of course, like traveling anyplace in the world, you need to be aware, but on a daily basis, the two cities function together flawlessly, so taking routine precautions that you would if you were going to more or less any other place in the world, you’re fine.”

A Hub of Innovation

San Diego–“America’s Finest City” (go at least once before contesting that moniker)–has been welcoming visitors since the 19th century. The climate. The sun. The sand.

Hotel Del Coronado. La Jolla. The world’s greatest zoo. The Holiday Bowl.

Outside of the notice of tourists, residents have been at work creating an innovation hub over the past 40 years, an economy highlighted by the World Design Capital distinction.

“That has really transformed our region and that is built out of both Tijuana and San Diego,” Glus explained. “We often think of innovation or tech economies as being hubs for engineers (but it) takes designers to be part of the team to get the software done. So, at the same time the San Diego Tijuana region has been building out this tech space, it has transformed our design community as well. That is, in part, what the attraction was for us in this bid for World Design Capital, to tell our story as this new global center that has been built on a rich tradition of designing, coming from being a border region, the colonial sensibilities of Mexico, and now this tech economy that has been built.”

Take Motorola’s regional operations as an example.

“A lot of (Motorola’s) manufacturing happens on the Tijuana side; the (research and development) happens on the San Diego side, but it’s only because of the proximity of Tijuana that we can actually do the research, have test markets in both countries, do the fabrication, and launch to Southeast Asia as well as the rest of the Americas,” Glus explains.

From smart phones and electronics, to clothing, housing, and automobiles–three automotive design hubs call San Diego home: Nissan, Mercedes and start-up Aptera–design influences nearly every aspect of human life. The cities we live in. The utensils we eat from.

Design has an outsized influence on quality of life, a fact not lost on San Diego, world renowned for its quality of life.

“We’re working very intentionally with designers to start with the needs of the community to make sure that they have control of their destiny. We’re designing communities front and center for the people who reside (there) first, who have stakes in those communities first,” Glus said. Like most other places in America, that hasn’t always been the case. “Historically, we are willing to say, on the San Diego side, we have built much of the city for others. We’re now building this city for the residents of yesterday and the residents of today and their children of tomorrow. We’re doing that by ensuring we’re designing hand in hand with those folks.”

With the spotlight and events made available through World Design Capital recognition, San Diego and Tijuana aspire to elevate the power of good design across the region, leveraging the area’s status as an innovation hub to make sure local resources and expertise are available and put to use for residents.

“Every one of us knows bad civic design, bad art design, bad street design,” Glus said. “We don’t necessarily think about the excellence in design that makes our lives easier, more functional, more efficient, and ultimately, for much of it, more beautiful.”

Visiting World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024

World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024, in partnership with hundreds of arts and cultural organizations and schools and universities across the binational region, offers a daily schedule of workshops, exhibitions, projects, speakers, and events.

More than any person could ever see.

On July 29, WDC 2024 opens its Exchange Pavilion in Balboa Park’s Plaza de Panama. It will serve as the event’s home through the end of the year with daily programming. The Park houses many of San Diego’s leading museums and attractions, including the San Diego Zoo, putting thousands of visitors and locals on its doorstep seven days a week.

Anyone looking to do more than browse is welcome at the World Design Experience September 18 through 25. Also centralized in Balboa Park, but spanning San Diego, this eight-day event will see all manner of activities and activations related to design taking place within the park. The highlight of the Experience comes the 20th through 22nd when leading designers from all sectors across the world will be in residence at the Pavilion sharing their expertise.

WWII veteran surprised as guest of honor aboard USS Midway


A visit to the USS Midway Museum in downtown San Diego turned into a surprise honor on Thursday for 98-year-old World War II veteran Charles Araiza.

Araiza believed he was finally getting a chance to tour the historic aircraft carrier. Instead, the longtime San Diego resident became the guest of honor during a ceremony on the flight deck, surrounded by family, fellow veterans, and museum visitors.

“Biggest ski boat I’ve ever seen in my life,” Araiza said with a laugh.

The USS Midway drew crowds of schoolchildren and veterans sharing war stories, as well as Araiza’s family, who helped plan the surprise.

“My daughter keeps saying to me, ‘You’re going to be a celebrity,’” Araiza smiled.

Araiza served as a private in the U.S. Army during World War II, deploying to the Pacific Theater with the Army’s 11th Airborne Division. After the war, he helped rebuild Hiroshima following the atomic bombing on Aug. 6, 1945.

During Thursday’s ceremony, retired Navy Capt. Steve Gilmore presented Araiza with an Army of Occupation Medal — nearly 80 years after his service — along with a U.S. flag that had flown over the USS Midway.

“Incredible. I just don’t believe it’s happening,” Araiza said.

Reflecting on his service, Araiza focused on those who never made it home.

“The ones that really deserve the attention are still there,” he said.

After returning from the war, Araiza married and moved to San Diego, where he and his wife spent 52 years together and raised two children. He owned City Auto Tops, an auto upholstery business in City Heights, for more than three decades before selling it and later upholstering small airplanes into his 90s at Montgomery and Gillespie Fields.

Araiza also helped fix upholstery on actor Tom Cruise’s seat on the F-14 used in Top Gun: Maverick, which was filmed in part in San Diego.

Despite a life filled with work and service, Araiza said he never considered himself extraordinary.

“As far as my service, I was just another GI Joe,” he said. “You do what you have to do.”

Araiza is currently receiving care from Sharp HospiceCare. His transportation to the USS Midway Museum was provided by AMR San Diego through its Sentimental Journey program, which offers complimentary ambulance rides to terminally ill patients hoping to visit a meaningful place one last time.

Volunteers fan out to count how many San Diegans experience homelessness


Hundreds of volunteers and county staff will hit the streets Thursday morning for this year’s annual Point-in-Time Count, a one-day snapshot of the region’s homeless population.

Around 300 county employees volunteer for the pre-dawn count each year, but it takes more — around 1,700 — total volunteers to be effective in the count, which runs from 4-8 a.m.

“It’s so important that we come together as a region to take part in an effort, like Point-in-Time Count, that guides where we direct resources and how we advocate for funding to support our unhoused neighbors,” said County Supervisor Paloma Aguirre. “I remain committed to being a steadfast presence and partner in meeting the unique needs of our downtown neighborhoods and across the county of San Diego as we continue addressing the region’s homelessness crisis. Insights from this count will help guide these shared efforts.”

The annual Point-in-Time Count is coordinated by San Diego’s Regional Task Force on Homelessness and provides a one-day total of the number of people experiencing homelessness in San Diego County, including those in emergency shelters and safe parking lots.

“The Point-in-Time Count is a vital tool that helps us understand homelessness in our community and shape how we approach solutions,” said Dijana Beck, director of the County Office of Homeless Solutions. “Every volunteer plays a critical role in ensuring we have accurate data to secure resources and create programs that make a real difference. We encourage county residents to join us in this effort.”

Last year, the number of people experiencing homelessness in San Diego County dropped by 7%, and dropped by about 14% in the city of San Diego, according to the data. The volunteers found no fewer than 9,905 people experiencing homelessness throughout the county, down from 10,605 in 2024. Last year’s data showed 5,714 unsheltered San Diegans and 4,191 individuals in shelters and transitional housing.

“This annual event represents a perfect opportunity for members of the community to truly listen, see and connect with our neighbors in need,” said Deacon Jim Vargas, president and CEO of homelessness-focused nonprofit Father Joe’s Villages. “When we survey neighbors face to face, we can get a better understanding of their exact needs and connect them to life-changing resources and services that have the power to end homelessness for good.”

The RTFH organizes and trains the volunteers. Those who have signed up will go out in small groups to help conduct a brief survey and do a headcount of people they encounter living outside.

The information collected is used to apply for federal and state funding to help people experiencing homelessness.

Following the count, Serving Seniors will host the CARE Senior Resource Fair at its Serving Seniors Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center at 1525 4th Ave. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will pass out information about the resource fair during the PITC.

Older adults who attend the event can get legal help, health and dental care, access to resources including MediCal and Cal-Fresh, low-cost meals, street medicine and harm reduction.

Judge adds protections for San Diego Rodeo animals at Petco Park


A San Diego judge issued a mixed ruling this week in an animal rights lawsuit concerning rodeos staged at Petco Park, finding that pregnant mares should no longer be allowed to compete and that onsite medical equipment must be adequate and “comprehensive” enough to provide care for the large animals.

The 21-page statement of decision issued Tuesday by San Diego Superior Court Judge Joel Wohlfeil does not end the rodeos, which have been controversial. The judge noted that the purpose of the suit was to prohibit practices that “allegedly subject the animals to ‘needless suffering’ or ‘unnecessary cruelty.’”

Wohlfeil’s ruling comes after he presided over a bench trial earlier this month. Two animal rights groups had sued C5 Rodeo and the Padres, alleging unfair business practices. The groups pointed to what they said amounted to animal cruelty. Two horses were injured or died following performances at the events.

The judge said that he “largely agrees” with the defendants but found “a limited number of practices” needed to be changed or stopped.

Wohlfeil’s decision noted that between the 2024 and 2025 rodeos, the rodeo management team adjusted the rules to not permit the use of electric prods — which had drawn criticism — and also to bar the use of mares known to be pregnant.

“(H)owever, more can and should be done to minimize the risk of ‘needless suffering’ by or ‘unnecessary cruelty’ to the animals, while, at the same time, preserving the sanctity of the rodeo,” the judge wrote. “It is the balance that the court has strived to accomplish in this (statement of decision).”

He said the two plaintiff groups, Animal Protection Rescue League and Showing Animals Kindness and Respect, met their burden to show a need to address the use of pregnant mares — one died after performing in a 2025 rodeo — and to require the presence of adequate medical equipment, which was not on hand when a horse threw its rider and rammed into a fence in 2024, leaving the animal badly injured. The horse later died.

The judge’s decision also said C5 Rodeo and the Padres issued a “false” press release following the 2024 horse injury.

The parties are due back in court in March for the judge to hear objections, if any, to his decision.

Attorney Bryan Pease, who represented Animal Protection Rescue League and Showing Animals Kindness and Respect, said the judge’s decision was “a definite victory and benefit to the public” as well as for his clients.

“The specific cruelty that was exposed and that occurred at both the 2024 and the 2025 rodeos are going to be prohibited from happening again,” Pease said.

Pease also said it’s “not surprising that the court didn’t kind of go out on a limb and issue a broad sweeping injunction against typical rodeo practices.”

Attorney Michael Healy, who represents C5 Rodeo, said in an email: “We are pleased with the order where it reflects that ‘the Court largely agrees with Defendants’ and C5 Rodeo is grateful San Diegans will continue to have the opportunity to be exposed to rodeo, our western heritage, and ranching traditions.”

A Padres spokesperson declined comment, citing the still-active litigation.

The rodeos at Petco Park, which is largely owned by the city of San Diego, have been controversial, prompting not just litigation but protests from animal rights groups and calls to ban rodeos within the city limits.

Proponents of such events point to their competition, heritage and cultural traditions, and critics say the events can be cruel for the participating animals. An effort a few years ago from City Councilmember Kent Lee to place restrictions — such as banning calf roping, team roping and steer wrestling — failed to generate enough support among fellow council members.

The January 2024 rodeo at Petco Park was the first within the city limits since the 1980s. It has since been an annual event — and, coincidentally, the bench trial (only a judge, no jury) was held in the days leading up to a rodeo C5 staged at Petco in mid-January.

The statement of decision highlights two incidents. The first was in January 2024 when a horse named Waco Kid threw its rider and collided with a wall. It collapsed immediately and stayed down, unable to stand without help.

According to Wohlfeil, some witnesses knew the horse was seriously hurt, including an on-site veterinarian who saw the incident and assumed — correctly — that the animal had fractured its cervical spine. But the equipment on hand was too small to X-ray the horse.

The judge ordered the rodeo management team to provide veterinary care that includes “onsite competent, comprehensive medical equipment” that can “adequately x-ray, scan, diagnose and treat the livestock” regardless of the animal’s size.

“The cost to the rodeo seems to be a small price to pay to avoid a repeat of Waco Kid’s debacle,” he wrote.

Wohlfeil also pointed to a press release issued the day of the incident, which stated: “Initial exam performed by the Veterinarian team did not reveal any obvious signs of fracture or instability.”

The judge said the press release “was false and intended to mislead the public.” He also said it was issued to “minimize the public’s perception” of the horse’s injuries, “knowing, at the same time, that the chances of Waco Kid’s survival were ‘thin.’”

The second incident the judge pointed to was in January 2025, when a 17-year-old mare by the name of Pearl Necklace died shortly after competing in an event. A necropsy determined the mare’s likely cause of death was a ruptured uterus and/or uterine artery, and the horse “appears to have bled out internally,” according to evidence the judge pointed to in his decision.

The judge pushed back on the notion from some trial witnesses who said they either did not know Pearl Necklace was pregnant or was as far along as she was. Wohlfeil wrote that he watched a video of the horse performing at the rodeo, “and even from the Court’s untrained eye, Pearl Necklace was obviously pregnant.”

Wohlfeil found the mare’s death was “both foreseeable and preventable,” and that the mare was subjected to “needless suffering” or “unnecessary cruelty.”

He also said it was not enough for a mare’s owner to declare the horse is not pregnant, and ordered the burden to be on the rodeo management team to verify that no pregnant mares compete in the rodeo.
