Python swallows woman whole in Indonesia

A missing woman was found eaten alive by a massive python after locals cut her body out of the snake in Indonesia.

Farida, 45, went missing on Thursday night. Her body was discovered inside the reticulated python Friday by her husband and residents of Kalempang village in South Sulawesi province, a local official said, according to AFP.

The search for the missing mother of four began after she failed to return home Thursday night, village chief Suardi Rosi told AFP.

Her husband “found her belongings… which made him suspicious. The villagers then searched the area. They soon spotted a python with a large belly,” Suardi said.

“They agreed to cut open the python’s stomach. As soon as they did, Farida’s head was immediately visible.”

The missing woman was found fully clothed inside the massive snake, which was reported to be at least 16 feet long.

Her husband, identified as Noni, expressed regret that he let his wife go out on her own. “If I had been with her that day, the snake would not have dared to touch her,” he said, according to ViralPress.

“I feel sorry for the suffering she went through. I am sorry for our family,” he said.

Such incidents are incredibly rare, but not unheard of in Indonesia.

Last year, residents of Southeast Sulawesi’s Tinanggea district killed a monster 26-foot-long python, which was found strangling and eating a local farmer, according to AFP.

In 2018, a 54-year-old woman was found dead inside a 23-foot-long snake in Southeast Sulawesi’s Muna town.

And in the previous year, a farmer in West Sulawesi disappeared and was later found being eaten alive by a 13 foot python at a palm oil planation, AFP reported.

The reticulated python is considered the world’s longest snake and is indigenous to Indonesia, the Philippines, India and Borneo. The longest reticulated python ever discovered was 32 feet in length and weighed an incredible 350 pounds, according to Reptiles Magazine.

Its natural diet is mainly rodents, but larger snakes have been known to feed on pigs, civets, bearcats and even primates.

Federal law prohibits reticulated pythons from being imported to the United States, except with a permit for zoological, educational, medical and scientific purposes.

Some reptile enthusiasts may breed them as pets, but they require lots of space due to their size and should only be cared for by dedicated and prepared keepers, according to Reptile Supply.

Downtown Augusta shops adjust as development projects reshape city center

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Downtown Augusta businesses are working through ongoing construction as the city center continues to take shape.

Andi Klinginsmith, general manager of Sosal, said the work has required extra effort to keep customers informed.

“When they’re doing construction directly in front of your building and the sidewalks open, but the road is closed, it’s about letting people know that, hey, we are still open,” Klinginsmith said. “There is still room to get by. Flagging them in and coming down to see us so they know that we’re still in business, still rocking and rolling.”

Evan Grantski, owner of Grantski Records, said his business plans to use social media and email to communicate with customers if access becomes more difficult.

“If it gets worse, we’ll just reach out to our people on social media and let them know or send them an email,” Grantski said. “But I’m sure they’ll be able to get to us and everything will be okay.”

Business growth trending up

Margaret Woodard, executive director of the Downtown Development Authority, said business growth is moving in a positive direction.

“Last year I believe it was around 45 net businesses opened up on the Broad Street quarter and as of today we’ve got 15,” Woodard said. “So we are pacing in the right direction.”

The Downtown Development Authority said new development projects are designed to bring more foot traffic into downtown. Woodard said the James Brown Linear Park will be part of that effort.

“There are some amenities in the streetscape projects such as the James Brown Linear Park that’s gonna attract visitors and residents downtown, where there’s actually an interactive park and things to do,” Woodard said.

Klinginsmith said the return of the arena will also draw people to the area.

“I think we need a place that everybody can come together and celebrate and be excited and the arena coming back will be a big part for that,” Klinginsmith said. “It’s gonna bring people into the city as well who aren’t from here. People who don’t normally come downtown will come more this way because of that.”

Grantski said he hopes the improvements will bring more activity to downtown.

“Life downtown, people walking the sidewalks and shopping and eating and drinking and bringing families,” Grantski said.

Correspondents’ dinner attack suspect Cole Allen being held inside D.C. jail complex, source says

Correspondents’ dinner attack suspect Cole Allen being held inside D.C. jail complex, source says

Cole Allen, the California man charged in the attack at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner over the weekend, is being detained at the Correctional Treatment Facility at the D.C. jail complex, a law enforcement source confirmed to CBS News. This is the same facility that previously housed many Jan. 6 defendants and is a newer facility than the main jail.

The CTF, operated by the D.C. Department of Corrections, holds men, women and juveniles charged as adults.

Allen, 31, is charged with attempting to assassinate President Trump and two firearms-related offenses stemming from the shooting on Saturday night. He has not yet entered a plea to the charges.

Allen is being held in a restrictive cell in medical isolation, which is standard protocol, the law enforcement source said. Corrections protocol requires that Allen be held under suicide watch for the first 72 hours in a green suicide smock while he is assessed. A lawyer for Allen told the court Thursday that he is being held in a “safe cell” under 24-hour lockdown.

Also, according to the source, a D.C. correctional officer is posted outside Allen’s cell door 24/7 while he is under observation. During this period, he is under strict observation with no access to outside materials. Allen is brought finger foods on a tray and is not allowed utensils, the source said. He’s allowed to shower every 72 hours. Allen is also allowed religious materials in his cell, such as a Bible or Quran. He has not requested any religious materials, according to the source.

The D.C. Department of Corrections says on its website that the facility consists of five separate, multi-story buildings situated immediately adjacent to each other, so the facility presents as one large structure. Housing units within the CTF range from 16 to 48 cells with a maximum capacity of 96 beds per unit. It is a separate structure from D.C.’s main jail.

The U.S. Marshals Service, which manages federal pretrial detainees, has a contract with the D.C. Department of Corrections, the law enforcement source said. The U.S. Marshals Service says on its website that it has contracts with approximately 1,200 state and local governments to rent jail space to house more than 63,000 pretrial detainees.

The U.S. Marshals said it doesn’t release detention locations for high-profile prisoners due to security concerns.

CBS News has reached out to the D.C. Department of Corrections.

Allen has been compliant since his arrival, the law enforcement source said.

During an appearance in federal court Thursday, Allen’s attorneys told the judge that he agreed to remain detained in the lead-up to his trial. A preliminary hearing is set for May 11.

His attorneys had argued in a filing Wednesday that  Allen was “gainfully employed” as a tutor, is a “devout Christian” who “dutifully” attends church and is an “active participant” in his religious community. They said he has no criminal history and is college-educated, and that those factors weigh in favor of release.

After telling the judge that Allen instead agreed to remain detained, his attorney, Tezira Abe, asked the judge to order the jail to lift his lockdown restrictions. The judge said she did not have the authority to override the judgment of the jail but would accept briefs on the matter.
