A closer look at Trev Alberts leaving Nebraska

On Wednesday afternoon, Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts announced that he would be resigning his position to accept the same job at Texas A&M. In his final statement as a Cornhusker, Alberts recognized the poor timing of the announcement.

Earlier today, I informed Interim President Kabourek that I will be resigning my position as Director of Athletics to accept the same role at Texas A&M. I recognize that the timing of this change is not ideal, and I apologize in advance for any negative impact that it might have.

I am grateful for the 15 years that I had the privilege to serve both the University of Nebraska-Omaha and my alma mater, UNL. My family and I want to say thank you for all the special memories that we were able to create together.

Alberts came to Nebraska in 2021 after a 12-year tenure at the University of Nebraska Omaha. To make the hiring official, Texas A&M will pay Nebraska a $4 million buyout.

Nebraska is well positioned for the evolving changes within our industry. Tough decisions will need to be made and unity of vision and high execution will be necessary, but I am confident that leadership in Nebraska will rise to the occasion.

Nebraska Athletics is full of high character, hardworking and talented staff, and coaches. It was an honor to get to partner with them as we experienced unprecedented success.”

In his statement to Texas A&M, Alberts cited leadership as the reason he found the job appealing.

“From my perspective, there has never been a more consequential time in history for higher education and the evolving landscape of intercollegiate athletics. Leadership matters now more than ever before. My interest in Texas A&M is not only due to its prestigious reputation but also because of President Welsh’s compelling vision in which, I believe, Athletics can play a small but important role in helping Texas A&M achieve unprecedented success.”
