Amish community grieves after devastating Wisconsin crash

As investigators in Clark County, Wisconsin, piece together how a crash left nine people dead, a community hundreds of miles away in southwestern Virginia is grieving.

A van and semi-truck collided Friday on Highway 95 in western Wisconsin, southeast of Eau Claire, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. Of the ten people involved in the crash, nine of them died. A toddler was the lone survivor.

Most of the people in the van were part of an Amish community in the small, rural community of Burke’s Garden in southwestern Virginia. The population is about 300, and it’s believed that nearly half of the community is Amish.

An information line set up by the Amish community says seven of the crash victims, ranging in age from six months to 44 years old, were part of their community. An almost 2-year-old survived, but he lost both of his parents, his baby sister, his grandma, and two aunts in the crash.

The information line also says the driver of the van was 45 years old and lived in nearby Pounding Mill, Virginia. Wisconsin authorities said the semi driver was also killed in the crash.

“Having nine lines snuffed out in one accident is a tremendous shock. No words can explain it. It is totally beyond our comprehension. Our hearts are torn and bleeding,” the Amish community’s information line says.

Their neighbors in Virginia are now rallying around them. Sara and Jodi White, who were born and raised in Burke’s Garden, Virginia, said their hearts are broken thinking about these families whose children they watched grow up.

“It has been the most devastating thing this community has ever went through,” said Sara White. “You could say ‘I’m sorry,’ but that doesn’t cover the loss of somebody. And when you are one person and you’ve lost your wife, two children, your son-in-law, your grandchild, I mean, what do you say to that person?”

The Whites have spearheaded the effort to raise money and collect donations. Their trunks are full of paper plates, utensils, water and other items that the Amish community will need as they prepare to welcome thousands to southwestern Virginia for support and funeral services.

“The Amish community is a community of people that will give you anything that they have to give,” said Jodi White. “The faith and the strength that’s being displayed by this group of people right now – it’s unmatched. It’s something that really is very admirable.”

A GoFundMe has been set up to help support the Amish families. A donation account has also been set up at First Sentinel Bank in Virginia.

Wisconsin knocks off another top-10 team in Michigan State

MADISON, Wis. — Nick Boyd scored 29 points and shot 5-of-7 from 3-point range as Wisconsin trounced No. 10 Michigan State 92-71 on Friday night, marking the second time in four nights that the Badgers have beaten a top-10 team.

Wisconsin (18-7, 10-4 Big Ten) is the first team to post three wins over top-10 squads this season. The Badgers won 91-88 at No. 2 Michigan on Jan. 10 and pulled out a 92-90 overtime victory at No. 8 Illinois on Tuesday.

The Badgers made their first five 3-point attempts in the opening 5½ minutes and never looked back on their way to a surprisingly easy victory that ended with a court storming.

Wisconsin never trailed and led by as many as 24. The Badgers shot 15-of-35 from 3-point range, including 10-of-17 in the first half.

Wisconsin’s 21-point win was its largest against a top-10 team in the AP Poll era (since 1948-49). The Badgers’ only other 20-point win against a top-10 opponent came on Feb. 18, 1989, against No. 5 Illinois (72-52).

Boyd scored 20 of his 29 points in the first half, while John Blackwell had 19 of his 24 in the second half. Nolan Winter added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Wisconsin.

Coen Carr had 19 points to lead Michigan State (20-5, 10-4). Jeremy Fears Jr. had 14 points and 12 assists, but he shot just 3-of-12 from the floor.

Michigan State trailed 24-14 when Spartans center Carson Cooper landed awkwardly on a drive and briefly left the game. The Badgers outscored Michigan State 8-0 while Cooper was out — completing a 15-0 spurt — and led 32-14 when he got back on the floor two minutes later.

The Spartans cut the margin to nine on a couple of occasions after Cooper returned, but Wisconsin built its lead up again and led 51-34 at the break. The margin never dipped below 15 in the second half.

How to Watch, Listen to MSU’s Interesting Test at Wisconsin

One of the longer breaks for Michigan State basketball this season is about to end.

Tenth-ranked MSU has had five days to rest and prepare after last Saturday’s win against then-No. 5 Illinois. Now, the Spartans (20-4 overall, 10-3 Big Ten) are back in action for an interesting matchup against Wisconsin (17-7, 9-4) on the road in Madison.

Just like Michigan State is, the Badgers are coming off an overtime win against the Fighting Illini, too. Wisconsin went into Champaign and took Illinois down, 92-90, on Tuesday night. The Badgers also have a win at now-No. 2 Michigan, so elite opponents don’t seem to scare them very much.

More on Wisconsin, Friday’s Matchup

What has been interesting about UW’s season is how up and down it has been. The Badgers’ road victories over the Wolverines and the Fighting Illini are two of the best wins in the country, but those are actually their only Quad 1 victories, with Wisconsin having a 2-6 Q1 record for the whole season and currently being ranked 37th in the NCAA’s NET rankings.

For some additional reference, Michigan State doesn’t have a win really even close to the quality of those two elite wins for Wisconsin, but the Spartans currently have a 7-3 record during Quad 1 opportunities.

There is also a “Quad 1-A” classification, too, which is the upper half of Q1. MSU is 2-3 in those opportunities, its wins being against Illinois and now-No. 11 North Carolina. Getting a win on the road against Wisconsin, a projected 8 or 9 seed currently, would be a nice addition to the Spartans’ resume.

Wisconsin has two key guards to know. Point guard Nick Boyd leads the team in scoring and ranks fifth in the Big Ten at 20.2 points per game. Two-man John Blackwell, a Michigan native, also solidifies the Badgers’ backcourt — he averages 18.7 points per game (eighth in the Big Ten).
