Pittsburgh Bridge Should Have Been Closed Before Collapse: NTSB
PITTSBURGH, PA — The National Transportation Safety Board said Wednesday that Pittsburgh’s Fern Hollow Bridge should have been closed before its spectacular collapse in January 2022.
NTSB officials revealed that determination in a meeting on the span’s failure. No one was killed in the collapse, but 10 people were injured- several seriously.
The NTSB determined that local officials repeatedly ignored maintenance and repair reports, some of which dated back to 2005. The failure to address those reports caused the bridge to deteriorate and eventually fall into Frick Park.
The collapse of the city-owned Fern Hollow span sent five vehicles and an articulating Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus plummeting onto a park walking path.
President Joe Biden, who was in town that day to tout the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that had been recently passed, toured the site and made a return visit in October 2022. The bridge replacement project was fast-tracked and a new Fern Hollow span opened in December 2022.
NTSB investigators found corrosion, deterioration, and section loss on all four of the bridge’s legs due to the continual accumulation of water and debris.

Intruder claimed to be ICE agent during burglary, police say
A man is in custody after Pittsburgh police say he attempted to impersonate an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent during a burglary.
Police were called to a reported burglary in progress Saturday night at a home in the 500 block of Climax Street in the city’s Beltzhoover neighborhood after a landlord said a man smashed a window and broke into a residence, authorities said.
While officers were en route, dispatchers reported that a tenant inside the residence had struck the suspect in the face with an object, knocking him unconscious.
Police said the suspect, later identified as William Gregory, was found lying unconscious on the floor when officers arrived. A juvenile victim was standing in a doorway with minor injuries to his right ankle and hand, police said.
According to police, the juvenile told officers that Gregory entered through the kitchen window, went upstairs and shouted that he was an ICE agent demanding to see paperwork. Police said Gregory then pulled out a pocketknife, threatened to stab the juvenile and began stealing a PlayStation console and controllers.
Police said Gregory also forcibly took the juvenile’s cellphone, leading to a physical altercation. The juvenile eventually punched Gregory in the face, knocking him unconscious before officers arrived.
When officers attempted to handcuff Gregory, he regained consciousness and resisted arrest, police said. Gregory continued to pull away as multiple officers tried to take him into custody before he was eventually tased and subdued.
Medics responded to the scene and sedated Gregory before transporting him to Mercy Hospital for treatment. Police said Gregory appeared heavily intoxicated and under the influence of drugs.
Officers later learned Gregory had multiple outstanding warrants, including for burglary and possession of a firearm. Police said they plan to request arrest warrants for Gregory based on the investigation and the reported offenses.

Brian Flores Back in Steelers Facility With HC Position On Line
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are conducting their first in-person head coach interview, only the candidate they’re bringing in is very familiar with the facility.
The Steelers’ first in-person interview, and one of their first three interviews in general, will be with Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Or, as some know him, former Steelers senior defenisve assistant, Brian Flores.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Steelers are bringing Flores in for a first-round interview. So far, the team has virtually interviewed Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator Nathan Scheelhaase and are set to virtually interview Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula.
“A couple interviews set for next week, one in-person. Brian Flores set to interview with the Pittsburgh Steelers, certainly a candidate to consider. He has been there. He has learned from [Mike] Tomlin,” Rapoport said. “A lot of respect inside the buildingin, would absolutely keep an eye on Brian Flores. … I would expect them to really, really take their time on this.”

Here’s What We Know
The Steelers are looking for a leader who brings a strong character and presence. They aren’t locked into a defensive-minded coach, but have certainly hinted which side of the ball they prefer, requesting to interview six defensive coaches compared to only two offensive coaches.
“There are a lot of things that go into being a successful coach,” Team President Art Rooney II said on what the team is looking for in a coach. “Number one, really, I think in my mind, is leadership and really trusting that this person can stand in front of your team day in and day out, and hold their attention and have them motivated to do what they do. So, that’s what’s most important.”
Flores is believed to be one of the favorites in Pittsburgh. The team really enjoyed his time with the team in 2022, working as their senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach. He is believed to have enjoyed his time there as well.
The only reason he left was because it didn’t make sense to stay. The Steelers didn’t have the position for him to fill and he had offers to be a defensive coordinator with other teams. So, he headed to Minnesota to join the Vikings.
He’s not back in Pittsburgh with a new opportunity. A bigger opportunity. But the two sides now have a chance to see if the fit is right, and if the belief that it could work – actually does.

Westmoreland high school notebook: PIAA championships have Pittsburgh history | Trib HSSN

The PIAA boys and girls soccer championships are coming to Highmark Stadium for the next four years.
It has been a while since the PIAA brought its trophies west.
Next year’s finals will mark the first time a state championship has been played in WPIAL territory since the 1992 PIAA girls volleyball finals were contested at Robert Morris.
There have been many state tournaments played on this side of the commonwealth.
The 1991 PIAA Class 2A football championship was played at South Stadium (now Cupples Stadium), and numerous PIAA basketball finals were played in Pittsburgh — proper and surrounding areas — before Penn State and Hershey became longtime sites.
The old Civic Arena hosted boys state finals in 1966, ’71 and ’79. Pitt’s Fitzgerald Field House hosted the boys Class 2A final in 1963 and ’65, and the 1962 Class A final was played at New Castle High School.
The Pavilion at Pitt Stadium hosted the 2A title game in 1947, ’51, ’53, ’55, ’61 and the 1929, ’31 and ’34 3A championships.
Irwin won its first two titles at the Pavilion in ’47 and ’53.
Valley won the 1979 title at Civic Arena. Franklin Regional’s girls took their ’79 title there, as well.
Washington High School hosted the 1950 PIAA wrestling championships.
Many don’t realize the PIAA was founded in Pittsburgh in 1913.
The WPIAL is looking forward to seeing the state’s premier games come to the city.
“We are extremely happy for our players, coaches and fans to have an opportunity to play for a PIAA soccer championship right in our own backyard,” WPIAL executive director Vince Sortino said. “Highmark has a great facility for such an event, and it also gives schools from across the PIAA the opportunity to see our beautiful city.”
Second offer for Brown
Jeannette standout quarterback/defensive back Kymon’e Brown wants to play Division I football, and he has more than one option.
A second program offered him a scholarship last week, with Albany reaching out.
His other offer is from the Naval Academy.
Brown has won back-to-back TribLive Westmoreland player of the year awards.
This season, he threw for 1,822 yards and 19 touchdowns and rushed for 1,119 yards and 17 TDs. He added 50 tackles and two interceptions.
The great indoors
The Hempfield distance medley relay is off to a fast start to the indoor track and field season.
The foursome of Ryan Ewing, Kieran Allison, Isaiah Bittner and Jonathan Stetchock broke the school record last weekend with a time of 10 minutes, 40.44 seconds.
The time ranks first in the state and is No. 5 nationally.

Lenart has five Division II offers from PSAC schools. The others are from Edinboro, Seton Hill, Gannon and Clarion.
• Jeannette running back and linebacker Nick Mendoza grabbed his first NCAA Division II offer, from West Liberty of the Mountain East Conference.
This season, Mendoza (5-11, 180) ran for 460 yards and eight touchdowns, and had 65 tackles and six sacks for the Jayhawks.
