County Planner Gives Year-End Report to Commission
Johnson County Planner Jim Waller gave his end-of-year report on his office to the county commission during their lasting.
Waller gave an overall view of happenings in the county from a planning standpoint.
Waller said there have been new homes built in county subdivisions in the last four years, and the numbers have remained consistent.
He said 11 homes were built in the Cross 3 Subdivision; 12 in the Emerald Park Subdivision; and 11 in the Shores at Lake DeSmet Subdivision, making up the “big three” for building in recent years.
Data he provided showed the county grew by 300 to 400 people in 2023 for an estimated population of just under 9,000 people.
Although he is seeing inquiries concerning minor subdivisions he currently has no active subdivision applications.
Waller said the city and county are experiencing very similar trends, according to the data.

How to watch, listen to San Diego State vs. Wyoming men’s college basketball game
Coming off a big loss at Utah State, San Diego State’s biggest task Tuesday night will be to avoid getting complacent against lowly Wyoming in the Cowboys’ final regular-season visit to Viejas Arena.
The Aztecs have beaten Wyoming 17 straight times on Steve Fisher Court, and the oddsmakers say they’re an 11.5-point favorite to run that streak to 18.
The Aztecs (15-6, 9-2 Mountain West) and Cowboys (13-9, 4-7) face off at 8 p.m. PT. The game will air on CBS Sports Network.
San Diego State is coming off a 71-66 loss at Utah State in which it blew an 11-point first-half lead. The Aztecs regained the lead but were outplayed in the game’s final five minutes. The loss dropped the Aztecs into a three-way tie with the Aggies and New Mexico Lobos.
“We’re excited to get back on the floor after losing a game,” coach Brian Dutcher said. “We don’t want to dwell on the Utah State game too long. Obviously, we played a pretty good game at Utah State, but we didn’t close the last five minutes. We didn’t play as well as we needed to to get a road win. So, we’re excited to get back home in front of a Viejas Arena crowd and find a way to stay in first place. That’s the key.”
The Aztecs beat the Cowboys 74-57 in the teams’ first meeting at Laramie on Jan. 14. This will be the final regular-season meeting between the long-time rivals.
SDSU, Utah State, Boise State, Fresno State and Colorado State are moving into the reconfigured Pac-12 starting next season while the Cowboys will be among the teams staying behind.
SDSU was the unanimous preseason pick to win the MW regular-season title and the Cowboys were picked ninth in the 12-team league.
Roster update
Magoon Gwath is expected to miss his fifth straight start due to a hip flexor injury and freshman Elzie Harrington is expected to miss his third straight start with a leg injury. Dutcher indicated the earliest either of them could be back would be a home game against Nevada on Feb. 14.
Key facts
SDSU hasn’t lost to the Cowboys at home since Jan. 3, 2007. The Aztecs lead the series 54-41, including 20-5 at Viejas Arena. San Diego State has won 14 straight overall against the Cowboys and 17 straight on Steve Fisher Court.

Big Boy Leaves Cheyenne Wyoming For CA, March 2026
The Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 will embark on a 2026 tour to celebrate the U.S. Semiquincentennial, starting with a westward leg from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to California from March 29 to April 24. Major public displays are scheduled for April 10–11 in Roseville, California, and April 18–19 in Ogden, Utah. An eastern tour leg beginning in late spring is also planned. Read the Union Pacific Schedule HERE!
Watch the video below, Big Boy 4014: How They Brought a Dead Giant Back to Life Shocked The World!
Delivered in December 1941, Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 is a massive 1.2-million-pound steam locomotive that primarily operated between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyoming, to haul heavy freight over mountain grades.
Watch the video below as Jay Leno tours the restored BIG BOY 4014.
After retiring in 1961, it was reacquired by Union Pacific in 2013 and returned to Cheyenne for a full restoration, returning to service in May 2019.
The Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 underwent a massive, multi-year restoration by the UP Steam Team, converting it from coal to oil, replacing parts, and modernizing its systems.
It returned to service in May 2019 for the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad, becoming the world’s largest operating steam locomotive. The process involved detailed inspections, complex crane-assisted reassembly, fabrication of new components, and conversion of its firebox to oil, making it a functional historical artifact.
As of early 2026, the Union Pacific Big Boy No. 4014 is stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming, preparing for a major 2026 coast-to-coast tour starting March 29 to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. It is the world’s only operating Big Boy locomotive, having recently completed tours in 2024 and 2025.
Big Boy Number 4004 remains an imposing sight, and you can see it upclose. The world’s largest steam locomotive, this powerful coal-fired engine was designed to pull a 3600-ton train over steep grades between Cheyenne, WY, and Ogden, Utah. The 4004 is one of the eight remaining Big Boys throughout the country.
The engine is on display year-round in the southeast corner of Holliday Park. You can park your car in the lot accessible from East 17th Street and Morrie Avenue.

Old Medicine Of The Chugwater Wyoming Drugstore
If you visit the tiny town of Chugwater Wyoming you’ll find the newly restored Soda Fountain.
In fact it’s Wyoming’s oldest soda fountain and malt shot.
It’s always worth stopping in for breakfast or lunch, or maybe a shake or malt.
The place was a drug store and soda fountain for the longest time.
Back then soda was actually used to cure an upset stomach.
So what sort of old medicines were left behind by Chugwater’s last pharmacist?
It turns out, some of them are on display.
