Food stamps: Final direct payment worth up to $1,504 to arrive in New Mexico tomorrow

New Mexico residents who are eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program should receive their payments Thursday before the program ends for July.

An eligible household typically receives food stamps on the same day each month despite the specific payment schedule for SNAP benefits ranging from state to state. Payments typically reload on the same day each month, with the date depending on a recipient’s account number, Social Security number, case number, or last name.

In New Mexico, SNAP benefits are issued between the 1st and the 20th of each month. Thursday marks the last day residents will receive food stamps for the month.

The New Mexico Human Services Department announced in September 2021 that the food stamps program would be increasing payments for eligible residents beginning in October of that year. Payments increased by 21% from pre-pandemic levels.

SNAP households are now receiving an increase in benefits of, on average, $36 per person, or about $1.20 per day. A household of one now receives a maximum payment of $250. A household of eight can receive up to $1,504 in food stamps.

A maximum of $188 is tacked on to a recipient’s food stamps payment for each additional household member.

SNAP benefit participants receive their payment via a prepaid electronic benefit transfer card. The EBT card works just like a debit card and can be used at participating grocery stores and farmers markets or at some retailers online.
