Florida, TCU clinch trips to MCWS; Wake, UT win

Florida and TCU clinched spots in the Men’s College World Series on Saturday and Wake Forest moved within a win of becoming the first No. 1 national seed to make the final eight of the NCAA tournament since 2018.

Virginia forced a winner-take-all Game 3 in its super regional, and Texas capitalized on Stanford mistakes in the ninth inning of its opener to stay on track for a third straight MCWS.

The No. 2 Gators got a career-best performance from Hurston Waldrep and finished a two-game sweep of Southeastern Conference rival South Carolina with a 4-0 win. They’ll make their 13th appearance in the MCWS — which begins Friday in Omaha, Nebraska — and eighth in 16 seasons under Kevin O’Sullivan.

“Just happy to have the opportunity to experience this,” O’Sullivan said. “Getting to Omaha is goal No. 1, but we feel like we have a team that can potentially do some special things in Omaha.”

TCU swept Indiana State with a 6-4 victory and will go into the MCWS with wins in 11 straight games and 17 of 18.

Wake Forest opened its super regional with a 5-4 win over Alabama and can lock up its first MCWS bid with another victory Sunday. There hasn’t been a top national seed in Omaha since Florida in 2018.

Virginia set a school super regional record for runs in a 14-4 victory over Duke to even the series.

Kentucky played at LSU and Oral Roberts at Oregon in other super regionals Saturday night.

Southern Mississippi led Tennessee 4-0 in the fifth inning when the game was suspended because of rain in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The game will resume Sunday morning and be followed by Game 2.

Waldrep allowed three hits and struck out 13 in a career-high eight innings for Florida, which had been swept in a three-game series at South Carolina in April and staved of elimination three times in last week’s regionals.

Colby Halter drove in three runs, the first two on a double that opened the scoring in the second inning, and Josh Rivera went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

TCU turned four hits and an error into five runs in the fourth inning, and Cole Fontenelle homered in the fifth against the Sycamores. The Horned Frogs are in their sixth MCWS, and first under second-year coach Kirk Saarloos.

Projected top-10 overall draft pick Rhett Lowder went 6⅓ innings for his nation-leading 15th win for Wake Forest, and Sean Sullivan struck out seven of the 10 batters he faced. Tommy Hawke, Danny Corona and Justin Johnson homered for the Demon Deacons.

The Deacons now must clear one more obstacle to become the first Wake Forest team to go to Omaha since the one that won the national championship in 1955. Since 1962, they’ve lost seven straight games that sent the winner to the MCWS. Saturday’s win gives them two chances, if necessary, to get the one they need.

Jake Gelof hit his Virginia single-season-record 23rd home run and three of his teammates also went deep in the win over Duke. Connelly Early struck out eight over seven innings to earn his 12th win, the most by a Virginia pitcher in 12 years.

A miscommunication in the outfield set the stage for Texas’ 7-5 victory at Stanford.

Down three runs, the Longhorns loaded the bases in the ninth on two walks and a hit batter. On Mitchell Daly’s fly ball, center fielder Eddie Park looked as if he would make the catch, but he peeled off just as right fielder Saborn Campbell moved in. The ball glanced off Campbell’s glove, two runs scored, and Porter Brown followed with a single for the go-ahead runs.

MEDICAL DELAY

The start of the Alabama-Wake Forest game was pushed back 2 hours, 15 minutes because of what was described as a “non-game-related medical event.” The event occurred before the stadium gates were scheduled to open, and fans were not allowed inside until an all-clear was issued.

NBA Draft: West Virginia Duo Produce Big Numbers in Upset Over No. 3 Gonzaga

NBA Draft: West Virginia Duo Produce Big Numbers in Upset Over No. 3 Gonzaga

West Virginia got off to a hot start at the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis by knocking off undefeated Gonzaga 86-78 in overtime in their first-round matchup. The Mountaineers have received strong performances to begin the season from two upperclassman transfers: Javon Small and Tucker DeVries.

With each player delivering standout performances, it’s time to start considering them seriously as draft prospects.

Let’s take a closer look at their outings in this big win and dive into their seasons as a whole up to this point.

Tucker DeVries had a big game for West Virginia

Tucker DeVries finished this game with a stuffed stat line of 16 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals and four blocks. This level of versatility clearly illustrates the type of player he is, as he looked solid in nearly every aspect of the game. He has good positional size at 6-foot-7 and plays with a very high IQ on both ends of the floor. His defensive impact was especially noticeable, as he consistently made impactful plays, including a steal that led to free throws to tie the game at the end of regulation. DeVries finished the second half on a 5-0 run, which gave West Virginia momentum to capture the game in overtime.

DeVries has had a solid all-around season leading up to this performance, averaging 13.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, two assists, 2.5 steals and 1.3 blocks, with shooting splits of 36.6%/40.7%/81.3%. If he were to be drafted following this season, it would likely be in the second round, but his versatile play style is very promising.

Javon Small has impressed for West Virginia

Javon Small led the Mountaineers in scoring during this upset victory, contributing 31 points on impressive shooting splits of 50%/40%/81.8%. In addition to his scoring, he also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out two assists and added one steal and one block. Small is a quick and slippery guard who stayed in attack mode throughout the game, translating well into fast-break opportunities. Rarely staying in one spot on offense, Small kept the floor spaced and forced his defender to fight through traffic to keep up with him. His offensive approach was patient as he waited for his defender to get off balance before attacking.

Before this game, Small had averaged 15.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, four assists and three steals. He leads the Mountaineers in points, assists, and steals, while providing a noticeable spark on a nightly basis. Small is now at his third school in four years, with similar statistics in each of his previous two seasons. As an older guard, it is not guaranteed that he will be drafted, but if this level of productivity continues throughout the season, he may receive an opportunity to prove himself at the next level.
