A proposal that would have considered including parts of lower Delaware in forming a new state failed to clear the Maryland legislative floor Aug. 3, following a debate over the state’s congressional districts.
Backed by Eastern Shore delegate Tom Hutchinson, the proposal would have included a question for Maryland’s nine shore counties during the November election, asking them if they would support seceding from the state and forming a new one. These nine counties include Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot.
The proposal was presented as an amendment to a state House bill, which aims to redraw Maryland’s congressional maps.
Hutchinson had said this new state would be called “Mardelva,” as he believed parts of Delaware and Virginia would be convinced to join them.
All nine of the Eastern shore counties voted in favor of then-former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
Similarly, Delaware’s Sussex County also voted for Trump, while Kent and New Castle Counties supported former Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
In the end, the proposal was shot down via voice vote, while the congressional map bill moves to a referendum.
This isn’t the first time lawmakers have heard this plan, as officials have made similar proposals as early as the days of the American Revolution.
Delaware itself was the result of a similar split in 1776, when it declared independence from not only the British crown but also the neighbor state of Pennsylvania. This is now celebrated annually as “Separation Day” in the First State.
