2 boaters missing after sailing to avoid Hurricane Milton: Coast Guard

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) St. Pete is searching for two boaters who were last seen leaving Charlotte Harbor in southwest Florida on Tuesday to avoid Hurricane Milton making landfall.

Andreas Gabriel Kirchberger and Kenneth Thomas Reutzel were heading for Tarpon Springs in a vessel called the Helderberg/Queen Milania, officials said. Tarpon Springs is about 92 miles north of Charlotte Harbor, which is located in Charlotte County.

USCG Southeast posted to X several pictures of their white-colored vessel which appeared to be a catamaran, a type of sailing yacht with two hulls.

It comes as a USCG rescue helicopter crew dramatically hoisted a man to safety after he was found clinging to a cooler about 30 miles off Longboat Key on Thursday. A USCG helicopter from Air Station Miami was captured on video approaching the man as a member of the crew is lowered into the water.

Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, Florida late Wednesday evening as a Category 3 storm with winds of 120 mph.

Milton’s death toll has now risen to 17, including six in St. Lucie County, one in Polk County and four in Volusia County. The deaths in St. Lucie County were caused by a raging tornado that ripped through the Spanish Lakes Country Club Village senior community.

The hurricane moved off Florida’s east coast Thursday morning after making landfall Wednesday. The powerful storm brought destructive winds, widespread power outages affecting over 4 million customers and a significant outbreak of tornadoes across the Sunshine State.

The USCG announced on Thursday evening that ports are re-opening following Hurricane Milton, but warned impacted communities should exercise caution.

In Florida, Key West, Port Everglades, Port Miami and the Miami River have reopened, according to the press release.

Where to find warming centers in Delaware during freezing temps

As temperatures fall, the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services will open multiple warming stations to provide shelter for anyone in need starting Jan. 28.

These stations will offer Delawareans “a safe, warm space to get relief from the cold,” according to a post from the department on the social media platform Facebook issued Jan. 27.

Temperatures through Jan. 30 are expected to be below freezing, with another chance of snow predicted for this weekend, according to a recent National Weather Service report.

The warming centers will include facilities located in all three counties, including Wilmington, Dover and Georgetown.

Here’s what Delawareans should know.

Delaware warming station hours

Stations will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 28. Stations will remain open throughout the remainder of the week, through Jan. 30.

These centers will provide space to residents in need of “a safe, warm place to go,” according to the Facebook post.

How to stay warm

With winter now in full force, residents are urged to take the necessary steps to stay safe as the weather turns cold.

This includes making sure your homes “can be safely heated” and you always have crucial items on hand in case of an emergency, including non-perishable and pet foods, water and medicine.

Delawareans are also encouraged to have a driving kit in their car this winter.

Items should include blankets or sleeping bags, extra warm clothing, first-aid supplies, drinking water and shelf-stable food items like protein or energy bars and trail mix.

The post office is hiring.

In recent weeks, the U.S. Postal Service has been holding job fairs to fill vacant positions for carriers, assistant carriers, and auto techs at Florida locations, with salaries starting at $21.89 per hour. The next two are in Tallahassee and Lake City.

Recent job fairs were held at Fernandina Beach and Jacksonville.

Here’s what to know.

Is the Post Office hiring?

The USPS in Tallahassee and Lake City are looking for “committed and motivated individuals,” according to press releases. The positions are:

Rural Carrier Associates (RCA) – $21.89 per hour, paid bi-weekly, full-time with health benefits. You would deliver mail on a full-time schedule that may include weekend and holidays.
Assistant Rural Carriers (ARC) – $21.89 per hour, paid bi-weekly, part-time. You would deliver packages.
Automotive Technician (AT) – $66,586 annually, paid bi-weekly, health benefits. You would perform repairs and maintenance on all types of motor vehicles used in the postal fleet. (Tallahassee only)

Benefits include multiple health and life insurance choices, pension benefits and a Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) like a 401(k), and vacation time and sick leave, the USPS said.

When are the USPS job fairs?

Tallahassee: Friday, Jan, 30, at the Tallahassee Post Office, 2800 S Adams Street
Lake City: Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Lake City Post Office, 250 NW Main Blvd.

Interested applicants who can’t make it to the job fairs may also apply at usps.com/careers.

What are the requirements to work for the post office?

You must be 18 years old or older at the time of appointment or 16 years old with a high school diploma
You must be a United States citizen or permanent resident
You must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug screening
If driving is part of the job, you must have a valid state driver’s license and a safe driving record

Georgia lawmaker proposes renaming Sawnee Mountain for Trump

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. – A Georgia lawmaker is proposing a new name for Sawnee Mountain in Forsyth County — “Trump Mountain.”

According to a post on social media, Rep. David Clark of Buford introduced a resolution to rename the mountain after President Donald Trump.

Clark called Trump “one of the most transformative Presidents in the nation’s history.” Sawnee Mountain is currently named after a celebrated Native American chief.
