RUTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) – Authorities are responding to a rail car derailment in Rutland City.

Vermont State Police say the rail car, carrying liquefied propane, derailed and rolled over Friday evening near the Park Street rail crossing. They say there is no leak or compromise to the tank, so there is no current threat to the environment or public health.

The Vermont State Hazmat Team and the Rutland City Fire Department are still on scene as of Saturday morning as Vermont Rail System crews work to get the rail car back on the tracks.

Authorities ask you to avoid the area to give their crews space to work.

Vermont State Fair staff announced via social media that due to the emergency response, the 2X Monster Trucks event has been postponed to Sunday. The fair property is adjacent to the location of the derailment, and they say the decision was made out of an abundance of caution.

The Vermont Lottery offers several draw games for those willing to make a bet to win big.

For Vermont Lottery prizes up to $499, winners can claim their prize at any authorized Vermont Lottery retailer or at the Vermont Lottery Headquarters by presenting the signed winning ticket for validation. Prizes between $500 and $5,000 can be claimed at any M&T Bank location in Vermont during the Vermont Lottery Office’s business hours, which are 8a.m.-4p.m. Monday through Friday, except state holidays.

For prizes over $5,000, claims must be made in person at the Vermont Lottery headquarters. In addition to signing your ticket, you will need to bring a government-issued photo ID, and a completed claim form.

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – A Vermont Republican running for the U.S. House is cautioning against President Donald Trump’s proposal to mail every American a $5,000 check.

About a dozen Vermont delegates were in Dallas this week for the first-ever midterm GOP convention, aiming to bolster turnout for Republicans in November. President Trump said if Republicans maintain control of the House and Senate, he’ll mail all eligible American adults a $5,000 check.

Gerald Malloy was at the convention and says such a move could raise inflation. “There are a lot of concerns with that: where the money is coming from, how that’s going to take place, the approval process. We have a $40 trillion debt. Do the math, that would be another $1.2, $1.3 trillion,” Malloy said.

He adds that if the checks were mailed out, it could have a big impact for Vermont families.

Malloy will face off against incumbent Democratic Congresswoman Becca Balint on Election Day in November.
