After going nearly 4 years winless in Boston, Kyrie Irving relished the Mavs' victory

BOSTON – Kyrie Irving knows how long it’s been since he’s left TD Garden with a victory.
He’s reminded of it every time he steps foot inside the hallowed arena. Every jeer that comes his way is a stark nudge that his former team has had his number in Boston ever since he stomped on the midcourt display of “Lucky the Leprechaun,” the team’s mascot, in May 2021.
There’s even a new championship banner hanging in the rafters that serves as a clear symbol of his Dallas Mavericks’ shortcomings in last year’s NBA Finals.
But nothing lasts forever. After eight consecutive losses in Boston, Irving finally snapped his skid as the Mavericks escaped with a 127-120 win on Thursday night.
“I was just trying to keep it as another game, but I’d be lying to you guys if I said I’m not aware of the record I have in this building since 2020 or 2021,” Irving said. “It’s more of a motivation factor for me than anything now because they’re the best of the best. They’re the champions in our league until another champion is crowned. You want to play your absolute best against them.”
Irving’s best wasn’t required of him for the Mavericks to emerge victorious on Thursday’s night primetime showdown against the Celtics. He finished with 19 points, four assists and four steals, but was supported by several of his teammates. Klay Thompson led all scorers with 25 points, while Spencer Dinwiddie scored 22 points off the bench. Naji Marshall had 20 off the bench. Two other Mavericks scored in double figures.
According to TNT, it marked the first time in franchise history the Mavericks have had three 15-point starters and three 15-point reserves in the same game. It was the first time the Mavericks faced the Celtics without the recently traded Luka Doncic on the roster, which called for a strategy that could likely be implemented going forward.
Irving scored eight of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, including two of his three 3-pointers. Irving’s first triple over Sam Houser followed a crossover into a stepback combination. As soon as the ball went through the net, Irving clapped his hands and yelled “C’mon!” It was one of the rare occasions Irving didn’t see a double-team by Celtics defenders, which was a common strategy that led to his struggles during the Finals last June.
“They’re going to do everything in their power to stop me,” Irving said. “I’ve said it in the past, but I feel like they feel like they know my game well enough. They throw double teams at me and a lot of different reads. It only makes me better. I’m just grateful. This is what competitive basketball is about.”
Irving is expected to receive plenty of defensive attention now that Doncic is no longer on the team, but he could have another All-NBA player in the lineup in Anthony Davis, his new co-star. Davis could make his Mavericks debut as soon as Saturday afternoon at home against Houston.
“We’re going to play through him,” Irving said. “Obviously, I’ll have the ball in my hands too, but we have that post-up threat. AD is able to get to the midrange and it’ll cover up for a lot of our mistakes and take the pressure off both of us.
“I’m excited. I’ve been seeing a lot of double teams on this trip and I’m excited for one of my other teammates – even Klay got double-teamed tonight. Don’t take it the wrong way, but I was excited to see him get doubled. It just makes the game a lot easier.”
Irving relished his first win at TD Garden in nearly four years, shaking the hands of every member of the Mavericks’ traveling party as he entered the visitor’s locker room.
Now, he’ll try to galvanize his troops for what could be a tumultuous homecoming in the Mavericks’ first game at American Airlines Center since Doncic was traded.

7-round Steelers mock draft comes up short for Pittsburgh

Pro Football Focus is putting out a series of seven-round mock drafts for all 32 NFL teams. We decided to take a look at the Steelers edition and while we see where they were going with the picks, there was so much more that could have been done with the choices.
Here’s how the picks broke down:
First round: CB Azareye’h Thomas – Florida State
We like Thomas as a prospect but not in the first round. There’s a real possibility he does sneak into the bottom of the round but there are far more pressing needs to address here.
Second round: WR Xavier Restrepo – Miami
We don’t see enough from Restrepo to differentiate him from Roman Wilson as a player. The Steelers need a dynamic guy for the outside but if they want a guy to line up in the slot, he needs to be a bigger body.
Third round: DE Rylie Mills – Notre Dame
Defensive tackle is one of the team’s two biggest needs but Mills is more of an outside guy in the Steelers 3-4 and they need someone who can consistently line up inside and clog the middle against the run.
Fourth round: QB Will Howard – Ohio State
Howard in the fourth round is a great value pick here. If the Steelers re-sign Justin Fields, Howard is in a great spot to learn behind him.
Fifth round: RB Kalel Mullings – Michigan
Mullings is a plodding power back and while this is what the Steelers run game has been, it’s not where this run game needs to go in the future.
Seventh round: WR Efton Chism III – Eastern Washington
Chism is an interesting guy but if you spend a second on Restrepo, what are you going to do with Chism?
Seventh round: IOL Luke Newman – Michigan State
Solid interior player who would make for some nice depth if James Daniels leaves.
I know this sounds like none of the picks are good but that’s not true at all. This would be a well-received draft. And many of these players are very talented.
However, this draft has to be a home run. Starters, franchise guys and players who will be great which this draft is lacking at several positions.

Drivers and homeowners in Enfield navigate icy conditions in town

There were some slick spots out in Enfield with the winter weather not over yet.
Plows were out clearing the streets in Enfield as people in town weathered this latest bout of winter snowfall.
Some of them pulled out the snow blowers.
“We had a pretty pleasant January, but February proves it’s still Connecticut in the winter,” Anthony Webb, of Enfield, said.
And it wasn’t just snow people had to deal with. There was freezing rain and sleet making for icy conditions on the roads.
“You want to be careful. I never drive fast, especially after snowfall,” Webb said.
Enfield Police Chief Alaric Fox said they responded to a decent number of calls in town throughout the day, but it wasn’t as bad as it could have been.
“The early notice and cancellations were able to keep a number of folks off the road and keep accidents to a minimum,” he said.
Fox said with this type of weather, black ice is always a concern.
“It’s so deceiving. It’s so surprising and it’s very easy to take that tumble,” he said.
A layer of ice covering an already heavy and wet snow, making it tough on everything from snow blowers to clearing off your cars.
“It makes it heavier. Some of the snow blowers don’t always get it in certain areas. You’re going to have to shovel because it’s too wet and heavy,” Jason Dubois, a worker with McNamara Landscaping, said.
With the weekend forecast showing more snow likely coming into town, Fox is asking drivers to be safe.
“Watching one’s speed. Making sure there’s a more than adequate following distance. Avoiding any distractions. Signaling where it is you’re going,” he said.
Fox said there are plans to beef up patrols to keep everyone safe on the roads this weekend, especially with Super Bowl Sunday.
