Angels beat Red Sox 6-1, ending Boston’s streak

Reid Detmers struck out nine and allowed one hit over six shutout innings, Zach Neto was 4 for 5 with a two-run homer, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Red Sox 6-1 on Tuesday night to end Boston’s five-game win streak.

Vaughn Grissom and Jose Siri hit RBI singles and the Angels scored twice on double-play grounders, providing ample offense for Detmers (5-8), who got his first win since a 1-0 decision over Kansas City on Aug. 15.

Detmers struck out at least one in all six innings he pitched and allowed only three runners. He retired the last 10 batters he faced after hitting Jahmai Jones with a pitch in the third, then was pulled before the seventh after throwing a career-high 112 pitches.

The Angels outhit Boston 15-4 and won for the just the third time in their last 15 games. Los Angeles also avoided a potential season sweep, improving to 1-4 against the Red Sox.

Boston went without a hit from Wilyer Abreu’s single in the first until Trevor Story led off the seventh with a double off of José Fermin, who allowed Boston’s run when Nick Sogard drove in Story with a single.

Neto gave the Angels a cushion in the eighth with his 24th homer to left-center off of Raymond Burgos.

Patrick Sandoval (1-5) struck out seven in six innings for Boston, but also allowed four runs on 10 hits and two walks. His two-out walk of Mike Trout in the third helped lead to two runs when Siri and Grissom followed with consecutive singles to put the Angels up 3-1.

Gas prices in Massachusetts hit record Labor Day high

AAA says gas prices in Massachusetts are at a record high for this time of year post-Labor Day weekend, a part of the calendar when drivers are used to seeing fuel costs come down.

The current average price of a gallon of gas in Massachusetts on Tuesday was $4.22, up 9 cents from last week and $1.10 more expensive than Labor Day 2025. The last time prices were this high to start September was in 2022.

AAA said the war with Iran and a stalemate in the Strait of Hormuz are driving the price increase. Crude oil is trading at nearly $100 a barrel.

“When it comes to pump prices, the combination of rising oil prices and declining inventories is pressing down on the accelerator pedal,” AAA Northeast spokespesron Mark Schieldrop said in a statement.

Gas in Massachusetts currently costs 7 cents more than the national average.

A graph provided by AAA shows how gas prices have risen in Massachusetts since the start of the Iran war in late February. The highest average gas price for Massachusetts this year has been $4.50 in mid-May.

The cheapest gas can be found in Bristol and Hampden counties, where a gallon is averaging about $4.12. It’s most expensive in Suffolk County ($4.35 per gallon), Martha’s Vineyard ($5.27) and Nantucket ($5.52).

The price of diesel is also way up in Massachusetts at $5.86 per gallon. A gallon of diesel in the state at this time last year was $3.86.

Bostonians enjoy unofficial end of summer on sun-filled Labor Day:

Monday was a banner day across Boston as crowds came to unofficially say goodbye to summer on a perfect and sunny Labor Day.

“It’s one of those things I say to myself, ‘I want to do that this summer,’” Ann McCann from Watertown said during a visit to Boston’s iconic Swan Boats. “Sometimes the summer can go by and this is the last chance. So here we are.”

Labor Day was the last day of the Swan Boat season, and it was a busy one. The family-owned business enjoyed an all-day long line of locals and tourists. When they reopen in 2027, the signature Boston business will celebrate its 150th anniversary.

“I’m really oftentimes very touched by the stories I hear and often overwhelmed because things are changing. A lot of things that have kind of been the fabric of our history may not be there anymore. Not only are these still here, but they’re exactly the same,” said Lyn Paget of the Swan Boats.

The warm sunshine felt like a gift from Mother Nature on this day off for so many. While some made a dent in a book, at Frog Pond young visitors made a splash.

“For me the best season is like August through October. Weather around here is great, not too humid but still pretty warm. Best time of year around here for sure,” Gideon Rabson in Brighton said.

At Boston Public Garden, the ducklings were making way for fall; the statues’ scarves were the colors of foliage – gifted by a fan from Maine. Across the city, no scarves are needed just yet, but Boston students were picking their outfits for the first day of school on Tuesday.

“I want to go back to school because I want to see my friends and see who my teacher is going to be this year. And I want to learn more about math,” Lisandro, a fifth-grader, said.

But before the hustle and bustle of autumn and holidays, Monday marked one last slow afternoon enjoying the city.

“Being here and walking around in this park is one thing and wonderful but to actually be on the water is an amazing thing in itself,” David McCann said of the slow Swan Boat ride.

“It’s just so lovely looking out at them. So peaceful,” his wife added.
