Sioux Falls woman dies in two-vehicle motorcycle crash near Sturgis

LAWRENCE COUNTY, S.D. — A Sioux Falls woman died Thursday from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash near Sturgis.

The crash occurred at 1:06 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, on U.S. Highway 14A at mile marker 50, about 2 miles south of Sturgis. The eastbound lanes were closed for approximately one hour.

A 46-year-old Sioux Falls woman was driving a 2013 Suzuki Gladius 650 eastbound on U.S. Highway 14A. At the same time, a 77-year-old Wrentham, Massachusetts, man was driving a 2013 Victory Jackpot westbound, according to preliminary crash information.

The Victory driver failed to negotiate a curve, crossed into the eastbound lane and struck the Suzuki. The Suzuki driver was wearing a helmet and sustained fatal injuries. The Victory driver, who was also wearing a helmet, was transported to a Sturgis hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The names of those involved have not been released pending notification of family members.

All information released is preliminary. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Football leaders unchanged, new No. 1’s in volleyball & soccer state polls

The seven No. 1-ranked teams remain the same in the latest South Dakota Prep Media Football Poll released on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026.

Brandon Valley (2-0 in AAA), Pierre (2-0 in AA), Sioux Falls Christian (2-0 in A) and Elk Point-Jefferson (2-0 in B) continue to top the 11-man classes.

Parkston (3-0 in AA), Freeman (3-0 in A) and Dell Rapids St. Mary (3-0 in B) remain No. 1 in the nine-man classes.

Newcomers to the poll this week are Harrisburg (1-1, fifth in Class 11AAA) and Sully Buttes (3-0, fourth in Class 9A).

Class AA Harrisburg (4-0) and Class B Chester Area (6-1) continue to lead the other classes.

No new teams moved into the rankings this week.

Sioux Falls Jefferson is the new No. 1 Class AA boys’ team in the latest South Dakota High School Soccer Coaches Association poll.

The Cavaliers were part of a three-way tie for second in the last poll and moved up to No. 1 ahead of Sioux Falls Lincoln.

Harrisburg (Class AA girls), James Valley Christian (Class A boys) and Sioux Falls Christian (Class A girls) each remain No. 1 in their respective classes.

The poll includes three new teams this week: Rapid City Stevens, tied for No. 5 in Class AA boys; Aberdeen Central, No. 3 in Class AA girls; and Hot Springs, No. 4 in Class A boys.

High School Soccer

Here is the South Dakota High School Soccer Coaches Association’s poll released on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026. The rankings are released bi-weekly during the season.

AG argues plaintiffs lack standing in proof of citizenship voting lawsuit

A voter registration group and a Sioux Falls man do not have standing to challenge a state law requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote, the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office argues in court filings.

The League of Women Voters and Sioux Falls resident Jaysen Hill challenged parts of the new law that went into effect earlier this year after the Legislature passed Senate Bill 175. The new law stipulates that voters who don’t offer proof of U.S. citizenship or proof of a residential address as opposed to a Post Office box or mail forwarding address can’t receive ballots for state and local elections. Instead, they receive a ballot with only federal contests.
