New York Giants Week 16: First Look at Minnesota Vikings Defense
The New York Giants proceed the robust stretch of their schedule by taking up the Minnesota Vikings, who’re at the moment the second seed within the NFC and in a three-way tie for the second-best document within the NFL.
Personnel
The Vikings wish to win on the level of assault, and their roster composition tells you that. Danielle Hunter, Za’Darius Smith, Harrison Phillips, and Dalvin Tomlinson paved the way for this defensive entrance, with DJ Wonnum rotating in because the essential third pass-rusher.
Hunter, Smith, and Wonnum have mixed for 158 pressures and 23 sacks off the sting this season. Smith is much and away the chief of the pass-rush group with 72 pressures, though his tempo for producing stress has slowed considerably in latest weeks. After beginning the 12 months by persistently producing 5 or extra pressures in most video games, Smith has solely been ready to try this in one in every of his final three video games.
On the inside of the defensive position, Phillips and Tomlinson are those that clog the center of the road of scrimmage. Whereas neither is thought for being nice pass-rushers, their 23 pressures every have them tied for fourth-most on the group.
The place Phillips and Tomlinson are at their greatest is manning the center of the road of scrimmage as house eaters and run defenders. Whereas the manufacturing numbers aren’t there, it’s clear that they make an influence primarily based on how troublesome it’s been for opposing offenses to run the ball within the inside.
On the second stage, Eric Kendricks (who is proscribed) and Jordan Hicks are the one off-ball linebackers that get vital taking part in time. Kendricks has performed the second most snaps on this Vikings protection, behind solely Camryn Bynum.
Kendricks and Hicks have been liabilities in protection this season, permitting a mixed 99 catches for 1,158 yards and 6 touchdowns. Hicks has picked up 12 pressures on simply 45 rush makes an attempt when used as a pass-rusher.
Within the secondary the Vikings have gone by way of their justifiable share of accidents, forcing them to begin Patrick Peterson and Duke Shelley on the surface, Chandon Sullivan within the slot, with Camryn Bynum and Harrison Smith – who simply returned to the lineup as nicely.
Regardless of being probably the most focused Vikings DB in week 15, Bynum allowed simply two catches on six targets for 15 yards. Peterson was focused 5 occasions and allowed only one completion for 15 yards.
The surface of this protection didn’t quit any house to receivers, and the deep safeties saved all the things in entrance of them. Whereas the secondary has made their justifiable share of errors and have been coping with accidents, they’ve been capable of carry out at a strong stage.
Scheme
Up entrance, the Vikings function out of a 3-4 that, when going to their nickel bundle, usually makes use of two down linemen and two stand-up edge rushers. Hunter is the participant who often makes the shift from a hand-in-the-dirt finish to stand-up edge rusher.
This week, the Gators play towards a protection that disguises their coverages higher than nearly each different group within the NFL. One factor that enables the Vikings to be thought-about a protection that disguises their protection so nicely is that they’ll usually present up in a two-high shell, whatever the protection name.
Whereas nearly at all times exhibiting a two-high look, the Vikings will play Cowl 2, Cowl 3, Cowl 4, and Cowl 6, and once they wish to play man, they’ll often play Cowl 1. Nevertheless, the primary coverages to look out for are the zone ones, as Ed Donatell, the Vikings defensive coordinator, is a Vic Fangio disciple who believes that zone protection is the secret about 80% of the time.
This isn’t an aggressive protection that can ship 5 – 6 defenders regularly. The Vikings haven’t any drawback dashing their entrance 4 and holding seven defenders in protection on the again finish.
When the Vikings use off-ball gamers to blitz, it’s nearly at all times a linebacker or nickel defender. Safeties hardly ever blitz on this scheme, it’s not one of many principals, and with this being a protection with two-high appears, it’s nearly unattainable to blitz from that far again.
What This Means for the Giants
The weakest a part of this protection within the passing recreation is the brief and intermediate center of the sector. Towards the Vikings, quarterbacks have accomplished the sensible factor to take simple completions over the center of the sector between 0-20 yards and permit their receivers to make performs after the catch.
Whereas that’s methods to decide up a lot of the completions, it’s essential to take deep photographs towards Minnesota. The Vikings essential aim defensively is to forestall massive performs, however whereas the group has been looking for its rhythm, they’ve struggled to efficiently forestall massive performs persistently.
Take what the protection offers you, which more often than not will likely be an beneath completion, however it’s important to hold your eyes downfield for a busted protection.
Concerning working the soccer, the precedence needs to be working outdoors the tackles. That’s the power of this Giants run recreation, however extra importantly, that’s the weakest level of the Vikings run protection. The Vikings have Phillips and Tomlinson in the midst of the road to stifle any rush makes an attempt however outdoors results in explosive runs.
Remaining Ideas
Essentially the most troublesome half about getting ready for this recreation towards the Vikings is determining which group will present up. The Vikings might have top-of-the-line information in soccer, however they’ve proven up as a distinct model of themselves week in and week out.
This can be a winnable recreation for the Giants, particularly if their offense can present up and exploit the very clear weaknesses on this Vikings protection.

Report: Falcons likely to cut former Vikings QB Kirk Cousins
The Atlanta Falcons are likely to cut Kirk Cousins before mid-March, less than a year after he left the Minnesota Vikings to head to Georgia.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that “executives across the leave” believe Cousins’ exit from Atlanta will happen before a $10 million roster bonus is due on Mar. 17, with Schefter citing “multiple sources” who say a split is now inevitable.
It comes in the week that Falcons made the decision to bench Cousins in favor of rookie QB Michael Penix, Jr., whom the Falcons drafted at No. 8 in March shortly after signing Cousins to a four-year, $160 million deal.
Given Cousins has a no-trade clause in his Falcons contract, Schefter notes that it’s unlikely Atlanta will be able to find a suitable deal to trade Cousins, meaning he’s likely to hit the free agent market for the second year running.
Cousins entered the season still recovering from the Achilles injury that ended his final year with the Vikings, and has struggled under center, with the tipping point for Atlanta coming after a 41-21 loss in Minnesota to the Vikings and a 15-9 win over the struggling Las Vegas Raiders, where Cousins threw for only 112 yards, one TD and one INT.
He still showed flashes of his old brilliance however, namely in the 31-26 win over the Tampa Bay Bucaneers in late October, when he threw for 276 yards and four TDs.
After moving on from Cousins, the Vikings signed Sam Darnold for a one-year, $10 million deal and drafted JJ McCarthy with the 10th pick of the 2024 NFL Draft.
