Michigan AG, others protest Hamtramck move to ban Pride flags

Dozens of people gathered in Hamtramck on Saturday to protest a resolution banning LBGTQ+ Pride flags from being flown on city property.

The resolution was passed unanimously by Hamtramck City Council earlier this month.

The resolution proposed by Mayor Pro-Tem Muhammad Hassan stated the city would not allow any religious, ethnic, racial, political, or sexual orientation group flags to be flown on the city’s public property.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel was among those in attendance Saturday. She joined others in pleading for the city to repeal the ban.

“Take down the wall you have now built that has made this proud city into a national embarrassment and raise the flag of equality,” Nessel said.

Under the ordinance, the only flags that be allowed be flown on city property are the American, state, and city flags, along with other national flags and the Prisoner Of War flag.

Mayor Amer Ghalib responded to the protest with the following statement.

“Our resolution is perfectly legal and constitutional and it was made to keep our city neutral so it doesn’t  open doors for different political, religious or ethnic groups to ask us to fly their flags on city and public spaces if we allow one group or another to do so,” Ghalib said.

Ghalib added that he is glad the protest was peaceful, “without a single incident of violence or aggression.”

Best College Football Prop Bets for Michigan vs. Ohio State in Week 14

“The Game” goes down on Saturday, but with less stakes on one side.

After several years of a College Football Playoff level game between Michigan and Ohio State, the Wolverines have cratered in a post National Championship hangover and are catching nearly three touchdowns at rival Ohio State, who is favored to win the National Championship.

Michigan’s offense has been its weak point all season, but Colston Loveland has produced when healthy. Will he be able to fill up the stat sheet in this rivalry matchup?

Meanwhile, look for a clean effort from the Ohio State offense who has a significant talent advantage in this one as it looks to secure a Big Ten title berth with veteran receiver Emeka Egbuka.

Emeka Egbuka OVER 54.5 Receiving Yards

Egbuka had a big outing against Indiana, who runs a ton of zone coverage, catching seven passes for 80 yards in the blowout victory.

Michigan, like Indiana, runs most of its defense through zone coverage, which is where Egbuka thrives.

The pass catcher sees his target share go up by more than five percent against zone coverage with a team high 27%. However, this number is up only four yards from last week despite the big outing.

Give me the over here.

Will Howard UNDER 11.5 Rushing Yards

The strength of the Michigan defense is on the defensive line this season, and Ohio State does have three preseason starters out on the offensive line. While I do think Ohio State can avoid too much havoc from the Wolverines to lose this game, I do think we can see a few sacks from the Michigan front seven, which of course will harm Howard’s rushing yard total.

With a game likely against Oregon on deck with a win in this one, I believe the Buckeyes try to keep Howard clean and not run him too much. Howard had five rushes for -1 yards last week while taking a sack, I can see a similar rushing yard output here.

Colston Loveland OVER 53.5 Receiving Yards

While I expect Michigan to struggle against an elite defense like Ohio State, Loveland has been the only consistent threat in this Wolverines offense that will likely need to throw at a high clip in this game.

Ohio State changes up its coverages a lot, but Loveland is clearly the top target in this group, racking 84 targets on the season. He has at least double digit targets in four games already this season, and I can see similar volume in a game the team is its biggest underdog of the season.

Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) —  A Michigan woman has spent days preparing Thanksgiving meals for kids in need. She said it’s not the food, but the sense of family that they need most.

“We just want to embrace the youth here and make them part of a larger family,” said Barbara Carter, a residential specialist at Lighthouse Youth Sanctuary, a program for runaway and homeless youth.

Lighthouse offers shelter, essential services and meals. And on Thanksgiving, the meal is special, of course, created by Carter for the program’s young people.

“Some of the youth are able to go home to their families, but there are those that are left behind. And we try to create an environment here that makes kids feel at home,” she said.

She said the meal is a labor of love, as she’s been in this kitchen cooking since Monday. But she said, like any Thanksgiving dinner, it’s about more than what’s on the plate.

“We have a tradition of the youth telling us what they are thankful for on Thanksgiving before we have dinner,” said Carter.

She said over the years the youth returned, feeling grateful for her and Lighthouse.

“It means I’m making a difference,” Carter said.
