Fast forward to their 50th wedding anniversary, officially known as the Golden Wedding Anniversary, and Lee decided to honor the tradition in his own way.

He ended up planting 15,000 sunflower seeds per acre to create a striking sea of blooms.

Speaking about his decision, Lee told KAKE-TV: ‘We’re celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary August 10 and you know, what’s a guy get his gal on their 50th?

‘I put a lot of thought into it and she always liked sunflowers.’

He continued: ‘I thought this is the year to plant sunflowers so we planted her 80 acres of sunflowers.’

And Renee could not be happier.

She told the outlet: ‘It couldn’t have been a more perfect anniversary gift than a field of sunflowers.’

The dedicated husband ended up planting 15,000 sunflower seeds per acre to create a striking sea of blooms

Sunflowers, which are also the state flower of Kansas, typically bloom for around two to four weeks.

But despite the gift being relatively short-lived, Lee said that he has no plans to make it a tradition.

The dedicated husband said: ‘It’s been fun but I think one time is enough for us.
