Check out the Saraga International Market in Indianapolis (Part 1)
Come along with IndyStar’s Madyson Crane and explore the Saraga International Market in Indianapolis.
Lauded Saraga International Grocery is opening a fourth location in Indianapolis.
Recognized for its vast selection of Asian, Latin American, African and Middle Eastern groceries, the Indianapolis-based chain’s next store will anchor the redevelopment of East Washington Plaza at 7803 E. Washington.
The supermarket is expected to open at the shopping center between July and September of 2027, said Doug Singleton, principal at Singleton Companies. Singleton Companies, which specializes in retail development across Central Indiana, has owned and managed the east side plaza for more than 30 years.
Saraga operates six stores in Indianapolis and Columbus, Ohio, providing more than 10,000 different kinds of foods and goods.
“We’re over the moon to have connected with Saraga. We’ve had conversations with a lot of different anchor tenants about anchoring this redevelopment and really trying to find the right fit,” Singleton said.
Saraga is leasing about 68,000 square feet of the 170,000-square-foot shopping center.
The East Washington Plaza supermarket will also include a Tous Les Jours French Asian bakery cafe.
Changes to East Washington Plaza
Singleton Companies expects to invest $20 million to $30 million in the redevelopment.
Improvements include new roofs and plans for updated facades, parking lot lighting and general infrastructure, Singleton said.
“It’s going to be a new look,” he said. It’s going to be exciting for the community.”
East Washington Plaza has been home to Service Merchandise, Jewel-Osco and Blockbuster locations over three decades. The Peddler’s Mall vacated space there for other digs nearby.
The site is located near local and regional transportation networks, with high traffic volumes from I-465 and East Washington Street, Singleton said. And, bout 548,000 people live within 15 minutes of the shopping center, according to CBRE, a commercial real estate agency.
“There’s a really dense population here that’s going to be able to shop here for daily needs. And with Saraga in our location off the interstate, we also see a regional draw here because of their size and reputation,” Singleton said. “People come from a long distance to find things you can only find at Saraga, but you can also buy bananas and milk and Cheerios, and the things we all eat every day here as well.”
With Saraga on board – on the west end of the center’s anchor building – interest in space has increased from smaller retailers and restaurants, he added.
“Now that we have Saraga in place, we’re having some pretty interesting, really exciting conversations with other tenants to take the remainder of the space in the center,” Singleton said. “All the traffic they’re going to drive will help us really put together an awesome redevelopment project here.”
