Del Harris planned to preach. He became a coach who made John Calipari ‘feel like a sinner’
What’s that phrase? Man plans, God laughs? Del Harris was going to be a minister.
That was the plan. He has the guts of a saint, obtained ordained and was going to spend his Sundays preaching from the pulpit. As an alternative, the basketball court docket turned his sanctuary.
He’s coached excessive schoolers, school athletes and execs. He’s coached within the nation’s most glitzy stadiums and in dingy gyms abroad.
He’s written best-selling books and has obtained a number of the most prestigious awards a typical man can earn. This weekend, the Plainfield Excessive Faculty graduate can be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Corridor of Fame.
Then once more, he’s removed from a typical man. He’s akin to John Picket within the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and China.
To John Calipari, who figures to be a Corridor of Fame inductee himself someday, Harris’ affect — not as a basketball thoughts, however as a person — is succinct.
“I felt like a sinner being round him,” the Kentucky basketball coach stated.
When basketball was king
Harris’ basketball journey started in Plainfield, the place he was an all-conference and all-county participant earlier than graduating in 1955. He grew up within the halcyon days of highschool hoops in Indiana. It was throughout his junior season that Milan gained the state championship. To today, practically 70 years later, the ticket stub to that title sport is the one one he’s saved.
“Basketball within the 50s, 60s in Indiana, you’d say it was king,” Harris stated. “It was a lifestyle.”
Of all of the wins he’s celebrated and all of the losses he’s endured, some stick out greater than others. Plainfield’s loss to Speedway within the sectional event throughout his senior 12 months nonetheless nags at him.
“The sectional was every thing to small cities,” he stated. “You knew you were not going to go in and beat the Indianapolis colleges on the regional, however you needed to win that sectional. If coaches did not win sectionals, fairly quickly they’d get up Sunday morning and there’d be a bunch of on the market indicators of their yard.”
Harris practically performed basketball and baseball for Tony Hinkle at Butler. Had it come to cross, he would have been part of an iconic group that included names like Bobby Plump and Wally Cox. However two weeks earlier than college began, the coach from Milligan School in Tennessee stopped by and persuaded him to return south. Harris was a three-time All-Convention participant in school.
He deliberate to go to Butler for seminary — these pesky plans once more — however his favourite school professor inspired him to return coach a junior-high basketball staff for a 12 months and get monetary savings earlier than going again to high school. It was a choice that modified his life.
“That 12 months of teaching junior excessive in a really low-income space was life-changing for therefore many for these youngsters,” he stated. “We scored over 100 factors 4 occasions in six minute quarters in junior excessive. It gave them an id and confidence that they did not have earlier than. They ended up with new targets and a brand new function. So did I. I made a decision that possibly I used to be speculated to be a coach.”
Del Harris did not want a whistle
He returned to his Hoosier roots to proceed his teaching profession — “If I used to be going to educate, I used to be going to do it in Indiana, the place basketball actually mattered” — with stints at Roachdale, Dale and Spencer. He captured that elusive sectional title in 1965. Then, Earlham School got here calling. Harris had set a objective to be a coach for a small Christian school. At 27, he achieved it.
He led the Richmond, Indiana, staff to 175 wins in 9 seasons, successful a trio of convention titles. To today, he’s the winningest coach in program historical past.
Avis Stewart was the third member of his household to play for Harris at Earlham. First his cousin made the journey from Marion to Richmond, then his brother, then Avis.
When Stewart was there, Earlham made it to the nationwide event and averaged 97 factors per sport. That sounds mighty spectacular, till you hear what sort of numbers the staff put up when his cousin was there — they averaged greater than 100 factors per sport with out a 3-point line.
Harris carried out his techniques with a cool and calm demeanor. He didn’t put on a whistle throughout observe. When he spoke, gamers listened.
“If he wished you to cease, he would increase his voice somewhat, not quite a bit,” Stewart stated.
Harris is a household man. Years after leaving Earlham, he returned to Indiana for a special day. Stewart’s mother was turning 90, and was having a celebration.
“He might have gone on and forgotten about us at Earlham,” Stewart stated. “However he doesn’t. He stays in contact regularly with the gamers from Earlham. He is all about relationships.”
Whereas at Earlham, Harris spent his summers teaching in Puerto Rico, the place he gained three nationwide titles going through a number of the greatest and brightest coaches on the earth. He caught the eye of Tom Nissalke, who was teaching within the ABA. In 1975, Harris left Earlham to educate the Utah Stars.
It was an indication of issues to return. Harris needn’t apply for jobs. Jobs would come to him.
‘Dude, you are a Corridor of Famer.’
When the ABA folded, Nissalke turned the top coach of the Houston Rockets. Harris adopted, and took over as head coach after Nissalke was fired. In 1981, he led the staff to the NBA Finals, shedding to Larry Chook and the Celtics. Then got here Milwaukee, then the Lakers, the place Harris was named NBA Coach of the Yr. In 1996, a rising star named Kobe Bryant burst onto the scene.
“What nobody might have measured on the time was what set Kobe aside,” he stated. “It was not his uncooked talent. Looking back, it was his will to develop into the perfect ever and the braveness to pay the value to do it day after day with a rarely-seen focus.”
He frolicked with the Mavericks, Bulls and Nets. Immediately, he’s nonetheless concerned with the Dallas G-League staff.
His worldwide profession, whereas much less well-known, is probably much more spectacular than what he did in the US. Harris helped the U.S. nationwide staff to a bronze medal within the 1998 FIBA World Championship as an assistant coach. In 2004, he turned the primary foreigner to educate the Chinese language nationwide staff, which included Yao Ming.
In 2011, John Calipari was requested to educate the Dominican Republic nationwide staff. Harris was considered one of his first calls. Collectively, they gained the bronze medal within the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship and certified for the 2012 World Olympic qualifier.
“We tried to construct basketball (within the Dominican Republic) collectively,” Calipari stated. “The younger applications, while you have a look at the place they’re proper now, Del was a giant a part of that. I obtained to be taught. On the time, I used to be saying, ‘Dude, you are a Corridor of Famer.’”
Calipari can be one of many individuals to face with Harris throughout his Corridor of Fame induction. He has so many tales.
“We’re enjoying in Venezuela,” Calipari stated. “The coach of Russia came visiting and grabbed Del and stated, ‘Coach, your guide on zone (protection) has carried out extra for my profession…’ I imply, it was these sorts of issues on a regular basis.”
The opposite factor Calipari remembers about teaching with Harris? That snicker.
“He thinks he is hysterical. He’s humorous, however the funniest factor is him laughing at his personal stuff,” Calipari stated. “That may very well be a skit on Saturday Night time Dwell. Folks can be cracking up and crying watching it on TV. Nobody that I’ve ever met — nobody, not even shut — laughs at his personal jokes louder than Del Harris. It’s unbelievable. The joke is not even humorous, and I am laughing as a result of he is laughing at his personal joke.”
Harris is a humble man who considers himself lucky to have been in the precise place on the proper time at so many stops alongside the way in which. He was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Corridor of Fame in 1992. In 2015, he obtained the Sagamore of Wabash, Indiana’s highest honor.
And now, after practically a decade of ready, he’ll be enshrined in Springfield.
Harris is reflective as of late, excited about all all of the twists and turns alongside the way in which. His journey began all these years in the past in Indiana, the place basketball was king. It’s nonetheless going in the present day, and his affect will reside on for many years.
“I have been blessed with a lot greater than I ever deserved or imagined might occur,” he stated. “You already know, I believe I used to be meant to be a coach.”

Gonzaga responds to loss with emphatic Thanksgiving Day win over Indiana: 3 takeaways
How does a team shake off its first loss of the season while facing a top-15 program that also has a lot to prove following its first defeat?
Ask Gonzaga men’s basketball head coach Mark Few — he and his coaching staff appeared to have all the answers to guide the Bulldogs to an 89-73 victory over No. 14 Indiana on Thursday to advance to the Battle 4 Atlantis fifth-place game.
The Zags (5-1) didn’t waste any time putting their overtime defeat to West Virginia behind them, as they jumped out to an 8-0 lead over the Hoosiers (4-2) in the first couple of minutes before taking a double-digit lead into halftime. Oumar Ballo kept Indiana in the fight early on to make it a 1-point game nearing the 9-minute mark in the first half, yet despite the former Zag’s efforts, Gonzaga capitalized on second-chance opportunities and transition points to go on a 21-2 scoring run, highlighted by an alley-oop dunk from Khalif Battle. The sixth-year guard led his team with 16 points and grabbed five rebounds, while five of his teammates scored in double figures, thanks in large part to Ryan Nembhard’s 13 assists.
With the win, Gonzaga will play the winner of Providence/Davidson in the fifth place on Friday at 5:30 p.m. PST/8:30 p.m. EST.
Here are three takeaways from the victory.
BULLDOGS IMPOSE THEIR WILL DOWN LOW
Braden Huff noted the Bulldogs didn’t have much of a presence in the paint in their loss to the Mountaineers. The Zags went a season-worst 19-of-44 (43.2%) from inside the arc and never established themselves on the low block, instead settling for 3-pointers when their first action didn’t lead to a score from 5 feet out.
Ballo and 6-foot-9 forward Mackenzie Mgbako posed a different kind of challenge, though, despite a hot start from Ballo, who scored 17 of his team’s first 31 points, Gonzaga’s bigs controlled the interior and the boards in totality. The Zags outrebounded the Hoosiers, 42-27, and outscored their opposition, 23-4, in second-chance points.
“Our bigs did a good job,” Few said after the game. “That’s the first team we played that’s kind of like us — likes to throw the ball inside a lot, really ducks in and really puts a lot of foul pressure on you. We were in massive foul trouble in the first half. Got in even more trouble in the second half. But they kept playing. They kept repeating and moving them in and out of there, and they were able to stay in the game.”
Ballo gave the Hoosiers a much-needed spark after they fell into an 8-0 hole. The 7-foot-tall, 237-pound redshirt senior nailed a few right-handed hook shots to put his team in position to compete with the No. 3-ranked team in the country. Ballo led all scorers with 25 points.
“Clearly he’s gotten a lot better,” Few said of Ballo. “I mean that was what six years ago [when Ballo arrived to Gonzaga as a freshman]? He’s older, he’s gotten in great shape. I’m happy for him. That right-handed hook was going tonight but we were OK with that. We just didn’t want him to get a whole lot of stuff between us and the basket.”
Michael Ajayi had his best game as a Zag, recording 15 points and nine rebounds on 5-of-9 from the field, while Ike finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Ben Gregg added 13 points off the bench and held down the center spot while Ike and Huff had to sit on the bench due to foul trouble in the second half.
AN EMPHATIC RESPONSE
Gonzaga’s players looked ready to flush away the dramatic loss to WVU the moment they stepped off the floor Wednesday. Having a short memory is somewhat necessary when playing three games in as many days, regardless of the final score. Safe to say the Bulldogs embraced that mentality heading into Thursday’s consolation game.
“There’s a lot you say in a 24-hour period like that,” Few said in regard to how he addressed his team in wake of their loss to WVU. “We talked about how in a game like the other night, comes down to one or two possessions, we’ve got to be able to execute, especially on defense. I didn’t feel like we played very good ‘D’ last night.”
The Zags flipped the script on that end of the floor against the Hoosiers. While Ballo was rolling down low, his teammates weren’t creating much on offense from the perimeter. Indiana’s starting backcourt of Myles Rice and Kanaan Carlyle combined for 12 points on 4-of-14 from the field. Malik Reneau, who led the way with 21 points against the Cardinals, put up a goose egg in the first half before ending the night with a quiet six points in 24 minutes of action.
ONTO PROVIDENCE/DAVIDSON
The Zags can enjoy the rest of their Thanksgiving holiday while they await their opponent for tomorrow’s fifth-place game at 5:30 p.m. PST. Gonzaga will face the winner of Providence (5-1) vs. Davidson (4-1) to conclude its trip in The Bahamas.
The Friars nearly completed a wild comeback against Oklahoma in the final minutes of their quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday. The Sooners led by nine points with 44 seconds left but missed free throws and a traveling violation made it a 2-point game in the final seconds. Wesley Cardet Jr. had 17 points, Jayden Pierre and Bensley Joseph 16 each and Corey Floyd Jr. put up 13 for Providence.
The Wildcats got blown out, 104-71, by No. 24 Arizona on Wednesday. Connor Kochera tallied 20 points and Bobby Durbin nailed five 3s for Davidson, which went 38% from the field.
