New Jumbotron at Illinois High School Falls, Damages Gym During Installation on Video

A scoreboard fell during its installation at Illinois’ O’Fallon Township High School last week, smashing as it hit the ground. Thankfully, nobody was hurt.

Superintendent Dr. Beth Shackelford said in a statement that “athletic activities and events will continue with adjustments as needed, and we are actively evaluating scheduling and facility options to minimize any disruptions.”

Nevco, the company installing the scoreboard, said the gym would be repaired in the next two to three weeks and the scoreboard would be replaced within six to eight weeks. Nevco will be handling the costs of those repairs.

Harvest off to a fast start across central Illinois

DALTON CITY, Ill. (WAND) – Corn and soybean harvests are off to a fast start in central Illinois. Hot, dry weather has brought down corn moisture levels to ranges perfect for the fall harvest.

Just a day after Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer, the harvest is already in full swing in some areas.

“We got started last Thursday,” Kevin Walker at Legacy Co-op in Dalton City told WAND News. “We had a little dab of corn coming in then Friday we dumped maybe 100,000 (bushels) company-wide. Today, I don’t know what we’re going to get, but we’ll dump 100,000 here, I’m sure.”

Corn crops are a little further along than soybean crops. But our news crew observed one soybean field with up to five combines working at the same time.

Farmers said early corn yields are around 210 to 220 bushels an acre.

MAZON – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that the BNSF Railway crossing on Illinois 47 in Mazon will be closed beginning on Sunday, Sept. 13. The repairs are expected to take seven days to complete.
