Gun ID Data Exempt From Open Records Law, Illinois Court Says

The Illinois state police department doesn’t have to release documents related to applications and rejection letters for state firearm identification cards to people applying for the ID cards, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled on Thursday.

The opinion reversed state circuit court and appellate decisions, which held that individuals could use the state’s Freedom of Information Act to obtain documents related to their own applications for a state Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card.
