The Kalshi promo code CLEVELAND and Kalshi referral code CLEVELAND offer a flat 100% deposit match—$25 in bonus funds on a $25 deposit, for $50 total—though availability for exchange trading varies by state, and Kalshi is currently unavailable in Ohio. Hungarian culture thrives in Cleveland

PARMA, Ohio — The 70th annual Hungarian Festival, Ohio’s largest Hungarian festival, marked a celebration of culture that’s decades in the making in Cleveland on Sunday.

Since the 1870s, the Cleveland metro has become home to tens of thousands of Hungarians.

“I grew up as an ethnically Hungarian in Czechoslovakia,” said Tamas Csajka, a Hungarian immigrant.

Csajka was born and raised in what’s now known as Slovakia; it was a part of the Kingdom of Hungary until the end of World War I. In 2007, Csajka moved to the U.S. His family still lives in Slovakia.

“I met my wife here in Cleveland, Ohio, and she was a Hungarian, raised in the Cleveland Hungarian family,” said Csajka. “Her grandparents came over in 1956.”

Neilsberg research of U.S. census data shows there are nearly 64,000 Hungarians currently living in the Cleveland metro area; over 153,000 Hungarians live in the state. That means one out of every 8 Hungarian residents in the U.S. reside in Ohio.

Csajka said he and his family maintain their Hungarian culture because he wants to make sure it stays alive. Part of that is by participating as Hungarian Scouts.

“Hungarian scouting started similar to the American scouting and worldwide in about 1910, and all the countries developed their own scout organizations,” said Paul Szentkiralyi, a scoutmaster for the Hungarian Scouts. “Unfortunately, Hungary fell behind the Iron Curtain, and scouting was banned.”

Szentkiralyi said when Hungary banned scouting, immigrants took it wherever they went, including Cleveland. Scouting started in the city known as “The Land” in 1951.

“We continue the tradition because people are also immigrating from Hungary, getting jobs in the U.S., and they want their children to grow up in a semi-Hungarian culture in addition to getting immersed in the American culture,” said Szentkiralyi.

Szentkiralyi said that to keep his Hungarian culture thriving, he helps with Ohio’s largest Hungarian festival, where Hungarians and non-Hungarians enjoy the heritage, the food, the people and the culture in one place. He said living and sharing his culture and heritage is a great way to ensure it gets passed down to the next generation.

Csajka, his wife, and their four kids are scouts. They speak Hungarian and live their culture every day.

“I think that the most important part and the most essential part is not just passing the food, the culture, the traditions, but the most important to pass the language,” said Csajka.
