Suspect in camping trip murder identified after dad found butchered in tent
Almost three weeks after Montana father and avid outdoorsman Dustin Kjersem was found dead on a camping trip, police have identified a suspect in his “heinous” murder.
The 35-year-old was found dead in his tent about two and a half miles up Moose Creek Road, near Big Sky on Saturday, Oct. 12. His friend who found him and called 911 initially believed he had suffered from a bear attack, but authorities quickly determined it was a homicide.
While authorities have not yet released the name of the identified individual, the suspect is currently in custody on unrelated charges, Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer said in a media release.
“It is believed the suspect acted alone and there is no longer a threat to the community,” Springer added. “Further details and charges are forthcoming, but it is important for this community to know they are safe to resume their outdoor activities.”

The suspect is cooperating with detectives and has led authorities to evidence they had previously identified, Springer said in the release.

Some of the evidence listed in a prior press release that police said may have been taken from the crime scene include an Estwing camp ax, blue and silver, likely with a 26-inch handle; a Remington Model 11-87 12-gauge shotgun, wood stock; a Ruger Blackhawk .44 Magnum revolver, blued 4 5/8-inch barrel, wood grips; and an orange YETI Tundra 45 cooler.
An autopsy showed that Kjersem sustained “multiple chop wounds, which led to his death,” police said.

“I want to thank the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office Detectives for their unrelenting pursuit of justice on this case. They have worked day and night for nearly three weeks with limited sleep, limited time with their families and limited time to themselves,” Springer said in the release.
“They have prioritized the safety of this community and the need to locate Dustin Kjersem’s killer above all else. It is this type of dedication that makes the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office and all law enforcement officers special. This community should be proud of the men and women who have chosen a life of service to keep you, your families, and your friends safe.”

Springer also thanked other agencies for helping with the case, including, the Montana Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI); the Montana State Crime Lab; the Montana Department of Corrections, Probation and Parole; the Medical Examiner’s office; the Montana Highway Patrol; the Missouri River Drug Task Force; Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office; Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement; Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks; the U.S. Forest Service and Gallatin County Search and Rescue.

Kjersem’s sister, Jillian Price, previously pleaded for the public to help find the person responsible for her brother’s murder in an emotional interview with Fox News Digital.
“Everybody stop and look and help find who did this,” Price begged. “I am asking anybody for help. Anybody.”
Price shared that Kjersem has a daughter and a stepson. When asked what she hopes others will remember about her brother, she said, “I wish they could have heard his laugh, but I just hope they know just how caring he was.”

Kjersem was last seen on Oct. 10 in the afternoon, leaving in his Ford F-150 to go camping. He had plans to meet up with a friend the next day but never made that meeting. The friend went looking for Kjersem and eventually found his body, authorities said.
“Our thoughts and prayers continue for the family of Dustin Kjersem,” Springer said. “We hope, by some small measure, our efforts can bring them a bit of peace during this horrific time. Our entire community mourns with you.”
Authorities say the investigation into Kjersem’s homicide continues, and the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office will have no further comment until charges are filed.

Utah
Full Arizona State-Utah Preview and Prediction
TEMPE — The Arizona State Sun Devils (11-11, 2-7 Big 12) are heading into their first game of a two-stop road trip tonight against the Utah Utes (9-12, 1-7) – in a game that is an absolute must-win for the Sun Devils.
Arizona State is coming off of an 0-2 week in which they dropped competitive games to UCF and Arizona, while the Utes lost to Oklahoma State last Saturday.
Follow a preview for the game below with Arizona State on SI.
Broadcast Details
- WHO: Arizona State @ Utah
- WHERE: Jon M. Huntsman Center, Salt Lake City, Utah
- Broadcast Network: CBS Sports Network
The Skinny: Utah is currently ranked 116th in the NCAA NET rankings as of Tuesday, which slots them in as the weakest Big 12 team at this juncture of the season.
Utah averages 79.5 points per game as a team behind a potent scoring duo at the guard spots, while the defense has exnountered a fair share of struggles.
Arizona State’s offense is a bit more balanced compared to the Utes’ unit, but the high-end scoring ability of the guard duo has potential to turn the tides in this contest.
This will also be the first of two meetings between the schools this season, as they are set to square off on February 28 in Tempe.
Utah Player to Watch: Terrence Brown
Brown is a 6’3″ guard that spent the previous two seasons at Fairleigh Dickinson, who he averaged north of 20 points per game for last season.
Now, Brown leads Utah in scoring (22.1 PPG), assists (3.9 APG), and steals (1.7), while also shooting north of 37% from three-point range.
Brown is a dynamic scorer that attacks all three levels, gets to the line at a respectable clip, and has the unquestioned ability to disrupt offensive positions.
Prediction: Arizona State Win
Make no mistake – this is the game that will define the remainder of the Sun Devils’ season.
While Utah has typically played stronger basketball at home this season, they are far from a balanced squad and tend to be more volatile than Arizona State, particularly as far as the offensive output is concerned.
The Utes arguably do possess more upside offensively, but the Sun Devils coming out on top feels to be the more reliable pick here – as Massamba Diop has a major advantage on the block, while Arizona State’s bench is stronger overall.

San Diego State bounces back with 72-63 win over Wyoming
The San Diego State Aztecs said goodbye to the Wyoming Cowboys as Mountain West opponents with a familiar result — a win on Steve Fisher Court.
Reese Dixon-Waters had another big game with a season-high 23 points to lead the Aztecs to a 72-63 win Tuesday night, their 18th straight against Wyoming at Viejas Arena to complete a season sweep.
The Aztecs (16-6, 10-2 MW) bounced back from a 71-66 loss at Utah State on Saturday that cost them sole possession of first place in the MW and put them back on the NCAA Tournament bubble.
SDSU and four other MW teams move into the Pac-12 next season. Wyoming (13-10, 4-8) is among the teams remaining behind in the MW.
Miles Byrd added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Aztecs. SDSU shot 45.1% while holding Wyoming to 32.1%.
Some good numbers
Other than an early 5-0 Cowboys lead and a 9-0 Wyoming run in the second half, the Aztecs were in control.
That wasn’t surprising, considering SDSU’s history following losses.
Odds are good for an SDSU bounce-back win. They have lost back-to-back games just nine times under Brian Dutcher and in five of those instances, the next opponent was nationally ranked.
In Brian Dutcher’s nine seasons as head coach, SDSU is 52-11 in games following a loss. If the next game following a loss is a home game, the Aztecs are 37-2. They’ve lost back-to-back games just nine times under Dutcher, and in five of those instances, the next opponent was nationally ranked.
How it went down
SDSU led 35-24 at halftime. It continued a 23-5 run into the second half before Wyoming went on a 9-0 run to pull to 40-33 with 12:55 left
The Cowboys whittled a 16-point SDSU lead down to seven before the Aztecs pulled away.

The lineup
Magoon Gwath missed his fifth straight start due to a hip flexor injury and freshman Elzie Harrington missed his third straight start with a leg injury. They’re also expected to sit out Saturday’s game at Air Force. SDSU then gets its bye week, and Gwath and Harrington are expected to return for a home game against Nevada on Feb. 14.
Up next
The Aztecs make their final road trip to Air Force on Saturday for a 5 p.m. tipoff on FS1. The Falcons are among the teams remaining in the MW, while the Aztecs head to the Pac-12. SDSU opened league play back on Dec. 17 with an 81-58 home win against the Falcons.

Nevada judge frees convicted MS-13 killer despite government warnings about public safety
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Despite a Justice Department warning, a Nevada judge recently ordered the immediate release of an illegal immigrant and MS-13 gang member convicted of murder back into the community.
U.S. District Judge Richard F. Boulware II, nominated by former President Barack Obama in 2014, ordered the Jan. 21 release of El Salvador national Harvey Laureano-Rosales, a 54-year-old who illegally entered the U.S. in 1987.
Court documents allege the government was attempting to deport Laureano-Rosales to Mexico without due process, and in violation of the Administrative Procedure Act, prompting his release.
The Nevada U.S. attorney’s office said it will seek further legal action, noting Laureano-Rosales’ release poses a risk to public safety.

“Our office remains committed to protecting public safety and enforcing the law remain top priorities,” First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada Sigal Chattah wrote in a statement. “In this matter, however, the outcome results in the release of a convicted murderer and known MS-13 gang member into the community, raising serious public-safety concerns.”
“We are deeply troubled by the risks posed to the public and will continue to pursue all lawful avenues to address those concerns and safeguard the community,” she added.
The U.S. attorney’s office said Laureano-Rosales has a final order of removal from the U.S., meaning he is required by federal law to remain in immigration custody, and releasing him conflicts with that law.

While Laureano-Rosales’ immigration case was ongoing, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ordered removal should proceed, triggering the mandatory detention period required by federal immigration law.
Court documents allege when Laureano-Rosales entered the U.S. nearly 40 years ago at age 16, he became a member of MS-13, kick-starting a violent criminal career.
He was convicted of a number of gang-related crimes, including first-degree murder, and granted parole in November 2022.

Days after being paroled, Laureano-Rosales was taken into custody by ICE, where he has remained for the last two-and-a-half years.

Attorneys claim Laureano-Rosales is no longer a part of MS-13 or the Mexican Mafia, and was not deported under the Biden administration due to fears he would be tortured or killed if sent back to El Salvador or Mexico.
