ESPN’s Paul Finebaum reverses course on Deion Sanders and Colorado

The Deion Sanders era at Colorado is starting to create waves. Not because of the hype, but because of how they’re starting to win games.

While Sanders, known for his outspoken personality, has been less vocal in recent weeks, his team has been speaking volumes on the field. ESPN’s Matt Barrie remarked on Sanders’ quieter demeanor, with colleague Paul Finebaum affirming that Sanders is letting his team’s performance do the talking. Finebaum noted that the attention Sanders initially received for his larger-than-life personality is now shifting to his coaching ability, especially given Colorado’s resilience despite dealing with key injuries.

Colorado’s defense has emerged as a strength, most recently holding Arizona to just 245 yards of total offense in a 34-7 rout. Despite Shedeur Sanders’ mixed performance—two touchdowns alongside two interceptions—the defense was able to limit Arizona’s star receiver Tetairoa McMillan, keeping him to only five catches for 38 yards. This dominant win puts Colorado just one victory away from bowl eligibility for the first time since 2016, a significant milestone in Sanders’ second season.

“I give him major credit for dealing with injuries. The Travis Hunter situation, his two sons both have been banged up… And really go out and convincingly win games,” Finebaum said. That’s hard to do. This is a bowl team now. I’m sure some of our friends up and down the hall where you live and work will have them in the playoffs tomorrow morning. They’re probably not going to be in the playoffs, but they have a very narrow path to at least take a swing.”

What Colorado’s Deion Sanders said after Arizona win

The Travis Hunter situation has been closely watched, as the two-way star continues to deal with a shoulder injury. While Hunter played in the Arizona game, he was held out of the second half as a precaution. Sanders praised Hunter’s talent but admitted he wasn’t at his best, reflecting the high expectations the coach has for his players. Despite Hunter’s limitations, the Buffaloes secured a commanding win.

With a 5-2 overall record and a 3-1 standing in Big 12 play, Colorado is inching closer to a bowl berth. Sanders, his son Shedeur, and the team are proving they are more than just a media spectacle. In the fourth contest of a seven-game homestand, the Avalanche hosts a Central Division foe and concludes its regular-season series with the Nashville Predators on Friday. In their previous three meetings in 2025-26, the Avalanche defeated the Predators 3-0 on November 22nd, Nashville won 4-3 in a shootout in Tennessee on December 9th and Colorado won 4-2 in Denver on December 13th.

Defeat in Overtime

The Avalanche lost 4-3 in overtime to the Toronto Maple Leafs at Ball Arena on Monday. Cale Makar, Brock Nelson and Martin Necas all scored for Colorado, while Nathan MacKinnon recorded three assists. Toronto’s Easton Cowan opened the scoring at 11:15 of the first period with a shot from the bottom of the left circle that deflected into the net. Makar tied the game at 16:12 of the first period with his 14th goal of the season via a right-circle shot set up by Necas, who found the Avs blueliner after performing a highlight-reel spin-o-rama move around Maple Leafs defenseman Jake McCabe. The Avs took a 2-1 lead on the power play at 17:53 of the first period when Nelson scored his 22nd goal of the season via a one-timer from the slot set up by MacKinnon. Bobby McMann tied the game for Toronto at 2:12 of the second period with a breakaway goal. The Maple Leafs took a 3-2 lead at 10:24 of the third period when Auston Matthews scored with a left-circle shot off the rush. Necas tied the game at 12:55 of the third period with his 21st goal of the season via a shot from the doorstep set up by MacKinnon. William Nylander scored the game-winning goal for Toronto at 3:59 of overtime with a right-circle shot.

Erik Haula gave Nashville a 2-1 lead at 3:03 of the second period before Leon Draisaitl tied the game for Edmonton at 7:20 of the middle frame. Hyman gave the Oilers a 3-2 lead with his second power-play goal of the game at 13:12 of the second period before Nashville’s Roman Josi tied the game at 13:50 of the middle frame. Josi scored the game-winning goal with his second tally of the contest at 3:43 of overtime.

Gov. Jared Polis delivers his final Colorado State of the State speech today

Colorado’s governor says his top priority for his final year in office is to make things more affordable in the state. Gov. Jared Polis is set to speak about that goal — and other initiatives — in his final State of the State speech on Thursday at the Colorado State Capitol.

You can watch his address to the Colorado legislature live on the CBS News Colorado stream at 11 a.m.

Colorado currently faces a massive budget shortfall. Last week, Polis told Your Political Reporter Shaun Boyd he is focused on the state budget and issues like affordable housing and education. He has proposed cuts to state agencies and a cap on Medicaid spending. He says he’s opposed to cuts to K-12 school funding.

Polis, a Democrat, is term limited and Colorado will be electing a new governor in November.

After Polis’ speech ends, the CBS News Colorado stream will air the CBS News Colorado at Noon newscast on delay. The newscast will include a post-speech response from Republican leadership.
