Jayden Daniels, Commanders keep Bengals winless after massive upset on the road
Week 3 for the Washington Commanders in the 2024 NFL season will forever be known as the Jayden Daniels breakout game.
For the Cincinnati Bengals, they’re simply at a loss for words, as they’re now 0-3 on the season after being upset, 38-33, at home by Daniels & Co.
The Commanders are now 2-1 on the season, and a lot of it has to do with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft putting on an absolute show on “Monday Night Football,” as he threw for 254 yards with his first two career passing touchdowns on 21-of-23 through the air.

And as he’s done earlier this season, Daniels was able to find the end zone with his legs as well. The biggest highlight of the night, though, came on the Commanders’ final drive, as the league got to see just what Daniels was made of.
On 4th-and-four from the Cincinnati 39-yard line, Daniels did not want to get off the field, and he was calling to his offensive coordinator, Kliff Kingsbury, to get a play in his helmet so he could set up his offense. At the time, the Commanders held only a 31-26 lead after Joe Burrow found Ja’Marr Chase for the second time on the night in the end zone.
Daniels, exuding confidence, took the snap and delivered a dot to his tight end, Zach Ertz for a nine-yard game to move the chains and continue taking clock off the scoreboard.
BENGALS, 0-2, CONFIDENT AHEAD OF MATCHUP VS. COMMANDERS’ ‘COLLEGE OFFENSE’
But, instead of just running out the clock, Daniels launched a bomb down the right sideline to Terry McLaurin on 3rd-and-seven for a 27-yard touchdown.
Daniels called game, as the pass put McLaurin at 100 yards on four receptions for the night.
Burrow and the Bengals’ offense tried to use the two minutes left on the clock for some miracle, and though Zack Moss was able to run it in to make it 38-32 in that span, the Bengals couldn’t recover the onside kick. The Commanders, then, pulled off the stunner at Paycor Stadium.
Cincinnati came into this game understanding that no team has ever made the playoffs in the modern era after going 0-3. So, while cliché, it was the truth: It was a must-win game for the Bengals in their minds.
And Burrow came out firing as he found Chase on a 41-yard touchdown pass to quickly go up by seven on the Commanders.
But Washington’s offense set the tone early on, as they responded with a touchdown of their own, crushing 6:12 of the first-quarter clock to see Brian Robinson slip through a hole and into the end zone.

Washington would go on to score a touchdown on its first three drives, and they all came on the ground as Austin Ekeler, who exited the game early with a head injury, scored on a 24-yard rush and Daniels kept it on a read option for the score.
By the end of the first half, the Commanders were up, 21-13, and they quickly furthered the lead on the first drive of the second half, and it would be Daniels’ first career passing touchdown. However, the recipient wasn’t who anyone expected it to be.
Offensive tackle Trent Scott scored a “big man touchdown,” as he slipped out on a fake run play and caught the one-yard pass from Daniels for the score.
Looking more at the box score, Burrow went 29-for-38 for 324 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, a performance that usually results in him winning games.

But the Commanders proved they are not to be taken lightly this season, as their rookie quarterback appears to have a cool head on his shoulders to kick off his inaugural campaign.

Tage Thompson Responds To MAGA Hat Criticism After Team USA Gold: ‘Proud To Be An American’
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
NEWARK, N.J. – It’s been a long few days for Buffalo Sabres star Tage Thompson. He scored a critical goal for Team USA in the team’s semifinal match against Slovakia, and then went on to help the U.S. ultimately defeat Canada on Sunday to capture the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Thompson admitted after Wednesday’s game against the New Jersey Devils, the first NHL game for Buffalo since the Olympic break, that he was tired, rusty and sluggish on the ice. But most fans wouldn’t know it. Thompson scored Buffalo’s first goal of the night and assisted on the second as the Sabres emerged with a 2-1 victory over the Devils.

Jack Hughes, a Devils star and the Team USA skater who scored the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat Canada, was honored by the team during a pregame ceremony. Hughes pulled an incredibly classy move and brought Thompson out to center ice, so the crowd could cheer the pair together.
Still, as impressive as Thompson’s return to the ice was, the story for much of the media following Team USA’s historic gold medal win revolves around the team’s trip to the White House and appearance during Tuesday’s State of the Union address by President Trump.
White House Visit, MAGA Hat Photo Spark Backlash
Thompson, in particular, found himself in the crosshairs of the radical left-wing media mob because he was photographed wearing Trump’s famous “Make America Great Again” hat alongside press secretary Karoline Leavitt and several teammates.
Karoline Leavitt shared a photo to social media posing with deputy director of communications, Margo Martin, and several members of Team USA. The photo included Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman, Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck, Jack and Quinn Hughes, and Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson. Both Hughes brothers wore red and white USA hats, while Thompson sported a “Make America Great Again” hat, prompting widespread backlash on social media. (Karoline Leavitt via Instagram)
I asked Thompson after the game if he had any response to the criticism over his hat choice.
“I’m proud to be an American, and I have my own faith, my own beliefs, and everyone’s entitled to their own opinions and beliefs, as well,” Thompson said diplomatically as he sat at his locker after the game. “I think we should be able to live in peace knowing that not everyone’s going to agree with you.”
Speaking of Thompson’s faith, I also asked him about his Christian beliefs that helped shape everything in his life.
“Jesus is everything to me. Obviously, we’re made imperfect. We’re all sinners, and we need him. And I fall short every single day, and he’s the one I rely on,” Thompson said.

“I think when you have that sense of hope, the grace and the mercy that I receive every day from him is something that gives me peace and joy in life, no matter what I do. And he’s blessed me with this game and this opportunity to play the game I love at a high level, a beautiful family and friends, people surround me that I love. And I’m just very grateful.”

I think American hockey fans can confidently say they are grateful to Tage Thompson and all the players on the Team USA men’s hockey squad that helped deliver one of the most monumental gold medals in U.S. Winter Olympics history.

Prep talk: Early season look at City Section’s top baseball teams
Who are the top teams to watch in City Section high school baseball and likely contenders to reach Dodger Stadium?
1. BIRMINGHAM: The Patriots have two quality starting pitchers, led by sophomore Carlos Acuna, plus an experienced closer, so if they play defense and get a little hitting, reaching Dodger Stadium will be no surprise.
2. EL CAMINO REAL: The defending City champions lost key players from the pitching staff to graduation but members from an outstanding junior varsity team are already showing signs they can handle the pressure of varsity ball.
3. NARBONNE: The Gauchos have an early-season win over Bell that will help them come playoff time.
4. BELL: Two years ago, Bell won it all, and several players from that team are off to good starts, led by Jayden Rojas. A 1-0 win over Palos Verdes was impressive behind pitcher Rigoberto Baltazar.
5. SYLMAR: Pitcher Alex Martinez and power-hitting outfielder Rickee Luevano are capable of having big seasons.
6. CARSON: The Colts have plenty of experience back to contend in Marine League.
7. SUN VALLEY POLY: Wins over Agoura and Quartz Hill show the Parrots are favorites to win East Valley League.
8. CLEVELAND: Just trust All-City player Joshua Pearlstein to make the Cavaliers strong in West Valley League.
9. VENICE: The Gondoliers went 29-4 last season and will need strong play from returnee Xander Lippman.
10. SAN FERNANDO: Tigers can be Sylmar’s strongest opponent in the Valley Mission League.

Browns head coach Todd Monken praises Sanders’ ‘elite playmaking ability’ ahead of QB competition
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
One of Todd Monken’s main priorities as the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns is figuring out who will be his starting quarterback for Week 1.
Monken has three options to look at this season — Deshaun Watson, who wasn’t available all last season due to injury; Dillon Gabriel, the team’s third-round pick in 2025; and Shedeur Sanders, the Browns’ starter at the end of last season.
Monken hopes one of these quarterbacks can set themselves apart over time. But all eyes will be on Sanders, who started the final seven games of the 2025 season for the Browns, to emerge as the starter for Monken.

During the NFL Scouting Combine this week, Monken was asked about his quarterbacks, specifically whether he sees Sanders as the team’s starter.
“I think what you see is elite playmaking ability,” Monken said, according to the New York Post. “That’s in him. You’ve seen it, we’ve seen it. You saw it in college. You saw it on tape last year. Sure, there’s a ways to go, but what rookie isn’t? What first-year player doesn’t have a long way to go? I’m excited to get started with him and all of our quarterbacks and all of our players.”
Sanders went 3-4 over those seven starts, while Gabriel was 1-5 after taking over for Joe Flacco, who was traded to the division rival Cincinnati Bengals after an injury to starter Joe Burrow.
It’s worth noting the Baltimore Ravens, with Monken as offensive coordinator under former head coach John Harbaugh, wanted to draft Sanders to back up Lamar Jackson, the team’s two-time MVP quarterback. However, Sanders made it known he wished to go somewhere in the draft where he had a chance of being the team’s starter.

Sanders was never going to jump Jackson on the depth chart in 2025 and beyond, so the Browns eventually took him in the fifth round after a shocking fall down the draft board last April.
Watson is in the final year of what has been a disastrous $250 million, fully guaranteed contract for the former Houston Texans ace signal-caller. While playing in three Pro Bowls during his time in Houston, Watson has played just 17 games during his time in Cleveland, which included suspensions on top of his injuries.
Yet, Monken believes a player who has shown elite talent on the field, no matter when it was, deserves a shot.
“I think you are always going to give them the benefit of the doubt that somehow we might be able to get that out of them again,” Monken explained. “I think that’s how you should look at every player. I’m going to let it play out.”

In his 17 games with the Browns, Watson is 9-10, which includes a 1-6 mark in 2024 before an Achilles injury ended his season.
Sanders threw for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions in his seven starts for Cleveland last season. He was eventually named a Pro Bowl replacement.
