COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Here are the Michigan State football players who helped or hurt their stock in the Spartans’ 27-24 win Saturday at Maryland.

WR Nick Marsh – The freshman’s fourth-quarter performance made MSU’s offense look like an entirely different beast for defenses to handle. Marsh ran through and away from defenders for a 57-yard catch to start the final period, then delivered a 77-yard, game-tying touchdown on the exact same route as the first. But he wasn’t finished, adding two more chain-moving catches in the final minute to set up the game-winning field goal, finishing with four of his eight grabs and 151 of his 194 yards receiving in the fourth. Marsh got separation all day on short and intermediate routes as well, but the downfield element he added to the passing game was most beneficial for …

QB Aidan Chiles – After languishing through a lackluster MSU debut against Florida Atlantic, Chiles (like the offense) looked like an entirely different beast. His connection with Marsh was clear, as the sophomore delivered a perfect strike as he absorbed a huge hit on the first long throw in the fourth quarter. On the second, with pressure again closing, Chiles launched a missile 51 yards through the air to hit Marsh in-stride over the top of two defenders. Chiles’ second TD, a 34-yard deep post pass to Jaron Glover, showed more pocket presence. Even though he threw three interceptions and now has five on the season, Chiles’ 363-yard, 24-for-39 day is exactly the type of performance the Spartans hope to get more frequently.

Brian Lindgren – So much of what Chiles did came off the rhythm MSU’s new offensive coordinator established in the first half, something Lindgren had mentioned in the week between games as an area he needed to do a better job on. The play-calling early was very intentional, starting with a swing pass to Montorie Foster Jr. on the first play and then throws to Glover and Marsh on the next two plays as part of an eight-play, 84-yard drive on the Spartans’ first possession. Foster’s 9-yard touchdown on the slant finished that one, and Lindgren gave Chiles plenty of chances to use all three of his top receivers and tight end Jack Velling in a variety of routes both underneath and down the field.

Losers

Offensive line – Coming off a first game in which they gave up a ton of pressures off the edge, the Spartans entered the Maryland game without starting right guard Kristian “Big Dooley” Phillips, who is expected to be out the rest of the season. That injury caused a ripple effect on the interior of the line, which struggled to prevent backfield penetration in the run game from every angle all afternoon. Coach Jonathan Smith said it is imperative that MSU must run the ball better moving forward after finishing with 130 yards on 30 attempts.

Secondary – The injuries continue to mount in the defensive backfield. Already without Dillon Tatum and Khalil Majeed entering Saturday, the Spartans watched both cornerbacks Chance Rucker and Ed Woods leave the game with injuries. One of their replacements, LSU transfer Jeremiah Hughes, also suffered an apparent upper-body injury midway through the fourth quarter but returned to the field. Prairie View A&M visiting next week gives defensive coordinator Joe Rossi an opportunity to give younger defensive backs playing time, because MSU will need the depth when it heads to Boston College and then hosts Ohio State in the following two weeks.

WR/KR Aziah Johnson With Alante Brown out after suffering an upper-body injury that likely will keep him out until at least November, MSU moved Johnson into the kickoff return role. However, the redshirt freshman twice ignored his teammates’ urging to accept a fair catch and took kickoffs out of the end zone, each return going 16 yards and pinning the Spartans’ offense 9 yards back from where they would have started had Johnson taken the touchback. Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams replaced Johnson after the second one as the deep back, with Nate Carter sliding into Lynch-Adams’ spot as the upback. Johnson did play nine snaps on offense at receiver, and he could see more time if Glover’s injury is significant.

Lumen Christi pulls away to beat Michigan Center


JACKSON — The Lumen Christi girls basketball team opened the coaching tenure of Scott Stine by pulling away in the second half to beat Michigan Center 50-28 on Tuesday.

The Titans led by five early in the third after McKynley Gaddy hit a putback and Mayrese Vieau added a pair of free throws for the Cardinals, but Lumen Christi responded with an 11-1 run, then added a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter.

“We worked all off season and are working right now to get to be able to play against Michigan Center,” Lucy Wrozek said. “They’re a good team who likes to push the ball up the floor, but we stopped that tonight.”

Lumen Christi’s stellar sophomores, Wrozek and Kenna Hunt, combined for 38 points, with Hunt leading the way with 20 and Wrozek adding 18.

In the first half, it was Wrozek coming up with key shots, scoring seven of the Titans’ first eight points of the night with a 3-pointer, a spin move in the lane to get a layup, and a drive down the lane.

“She’s a basketball player,” Stine said. “That’s one of the best compliments I can give her. She can shoot the ball, she can get to the hoop, she plays defense. She’s a tough kid who, one game it might be hitting 3s. The next game it might be getting to the hoop and getting to the foul line. But she’s going to make winning basketball plays.”

Hunt scored six points in the first half, limited by Michigan Center’s use of a box-and-one against her.

“I thought we played great defense,” Cardinals coach Greg Vieau said. “I thought we had a really good game plan to really squeeze in on Kenna. And I thought Mayrese did a really nice job defensively on her that first half. And then they got us into some switches that second half and really caused us some problems. They made some nice adjustments at halftime to get other girls on Kenna, and she was just more effective than that second half.”

But in the second half she scored six points in the third and eight more in the fourth. Hunt had a series of third-quarter layups, one in transition off of a steal, to extend the Titans’ lead to 33-18 after three. She then opened the fourth with another layup before Wrozek drained a 3-pointer off a drive-and-kick from Lily Ganton.

That 3-pointer answered one at the other end moments earlier from Gaddy off of a Mayrese Vieau assist. That bucket, and a Karsyn Smith floater in the lane moments earlier, helped the Cardinals briefly keep pace with Lumen Christi, but the Titan defense clamped down from there, getting defensive stops on the next eight Michigan Center possessions before a transition layup ended that string, that basket coming off a Gaddy steal, with the Michigan Center junior guard then feeding a behind-the-back pass to Mayrese Vieau for the layup.

Mayrese Vieau led the Cardinals with 12 points and Gaddy added eight.

“They’ve played together forever with AAU and now with high school,” Greg Vieau said. “They know each other really well. They missed some shots I think that they would like to get back, but they played really well off each other. They seem to know where the other one is going at all times. So while their shots were off tonight, I expect them to be two of the better guards in the state.”

But the Titans also kept coming up with defensive stops. Michigan Center turned the ball over 20 times in the game and Lumen Christi held the Cardinals to 11 points in the first half.

“I’m really proud of the way we played defense for four quarters,” Stine said. “To hold that team to 11 points at halftime, even with our offensive struggles, it’s impressive.”

Both teams struggled with cold spells shooting the ball at times. Michigan Center, after an Ella Best 3-pointer in the first quarter, did not connect from long range again until Gaddy’s 3-pointer early in the fourth. The Cardinals shot 10-for-41 overall from the field.

“Offensively, we looked like we had three girls with experience and five girls without,” Greg Vieau said.

But Lumen Christi also suffered through shooting woes, going 6-of-32 from the field in the first half before knocking down 12-of-35 in the second half.

Part of that surge came from adjusting to what Michigan Center was doing on defense.

“When they came out in the box-and-one, we had a little issue with it,” Stine said. “At halftime, we drew up some stuff where we could just put our shooter in the corner and put Kenna in a situation where if they were switching the high screen, she could attack the mismatch. And they had to pick their poison at that point.”

Helping limit the Titan shooters was Kara Straub, who swatted away a pair of shots in the paint in the first half.

“Kara has a knack for blocking shots,” Greg Vieau said. “She’s big, she’s long, she’s athletic, so we expect her to block a lot of shots. She’s very active in the post, so defensively she really anchored us. She really makes up for some of those mistakes that we might make on the perimeter.”

Michigan cannabis industry group plans to appeal pending 24% wholesale tax



Representatives of Michigan’s cannabis industry plan to appeal a Michigan Court of Claims decision to leave in place a pending 24% wholesale tax on cannabis. 

“We don’t believe the Court of Claims made the right call,” said Rose Tantraphol, spokesperson for the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association. “While we are deeply frustrated by this ruling, I can tell you this: The fight is far from over.” 

The association represents more than 400 cannabis producers across the state.

Michigan’s retail cannabis industry boomed in the years after voters approved a ballot issue in 2018 allowing recreational use among adults age 21 and older. Local cities and townships can restrict or prohibit the establishment of cannabis businesses within their jurisdiction, and many did just that as the laws took effect. In the communities where retail cannabis business is allowed, the market can be competitive. 

The new tax, set to take effect on Jan. 1, was part of Michigan’s fiscal year 2026 state budget, which passed in October. The wholesale tax of 24% on marijuana sales as growers and processors ship to distributors is meant to help fund road repairs, generating an estimated $420 million in new revenue toward an annual $1.8 billion road budget. 

Less than 24 hours after Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the pending tax into law, the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association filed its lawsuit. The legal action hoped to strike the tax in its entirety. 

While the pending tax is not directed at retail sales, dispensary customers already pay a 6% sales tax, along with a 10% excise tax on marijuana products.

  • New report highlight barriers that stop people from becoming teachers
  • Research shows teacher diversity is linked to better student performance 

As Michigan schools continue to struggle to find enough highly qualified teachers, a new report points to a lack of teacher diversity statewide.

Statewide, 11.3% of teachers are people of color, compared to about 37.7% of students in Michigan public schools, according to new analysis from EdTrust-Midwest, a school policy and advocacy organization. 

Charlotte Pierce, senior policy analyst for EdTrust-Midwest, said about 11% of students go to schools with no teachers of color, meaning about 1 in 10 Michigan students are “going to school and seeing no diverse representation in the front of their classrooms.”

The report offers several ideas to increase teacher diversity throughout the pipeline — from the moment someone chooses to become a teacher all the way through the person’s employment in a school. 

Research shows that Black students who are taught by a Black teacher are more likely to graduate high school and enroll in college while being less likely to be chronically absent or get suspended, said Seth Gershenson, a public policy professor at American University. Gershenson researches teacher diversity and said there are also social benefits to teacher diversity.

School is one of the first places children encounter adults that aren’t family members, and “it’s useful for kids of all backgrounds to see that people of different backgrounds can be in those professional positions of authority.”

EdTrust-Midwest’s report, released Tuesday, builds on findings from earlier this year, including a report revealing that while districts with the highest concentration of student poverty employ 13.5% of teachers in the state, they employ 38% of the teachers who have emergency credentials.

Teachers in those high-poverty districts also employ 33.5% of the teachers statewide who are teaching outside of the grade level or subject area on their teaching license. 

“Our goal is to increase the teachers of color who join and stay in the teacher workforce,” said Pierce of EdTrust-Midwest.

The report joins a chorus of other recent reports calling for changes to Michigan’s education system. A state-sponsored report from the University of Michigan’s Youth Policy Lab recommends giving the governor more authority over education policy and more funding for the Michigan Department of Education. A report from the Autism Alliance of Michigan and other special education stakeholders calls for changes in how special education is funded in public schools. 

The report also comes during a time where the federal government has placed increased scrutiny on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

The teacher starting salary in Michigan is $41,645, according to a report from Education Policy Innovation Collaborative at Michigan State University. 

Actions, recommendations

Michigan has a program to help students in sixth through 12th grade to explore teaching as a profession, funding to help future teachers with college scholarships and financial support for student teaching.

The group recommends the state find ways to expose younger students to teaching as a profession, continue the scholarships and student teaching support and help teachers pay back their student loans.

As college students work toward their teaching credential, EdTrust-Midwest recommends curricula that are “culturally and linguistically sustaining for candidates of color” and that the state “should strengthen its oversight of teacher preparation programs” to ensure teachers are prepared to teach. 

The Michigan Department of Education has repeatedly advocated for funding to address teacher workforce concerns 

“There have been an additional 2,272 teachers of color added to the state workforce in the last eight years, which is a 34% increase,” MDE said in a statement, noting that “the department recognizes that more work is necessary to increase the diversity of the state’s educator workforce.”

It was not immediately clear how many teachers of color left the profession in those eight years.

MDE also assesses educator preparation programs when they are initially formed and after five years. Programs are evaluated annually by the state and required to have national accreditation.

EdTrust-Midwest recommends districts having inclusive working environments for teachers of color, create affinity groups and “same-race early teacher mentoring relationships for new teachers of color.”

Finally, the group recommends putting in additional protections so that new teachers are not lost to layoffs through “Last In, First Out” policies. This could include protections for teachers in subject areas that are often hard to fill or teachers who completed a “grow your own” program.
