It’s going to be another fantastic day in the Pittsburgh area today with plenty of sunshine

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Today is looking like another fantastic day with highs slightly below average and plenty of sunshine.

Any Alert Days Ahead? There’s the potential for a First Alert Weather Day on Friday into Saturday due to gulf moisture passing by. The chance for this coming our way is lower today than it was yesterday.

Aware: Every year, Pittsburgh sees 92 days (June 15-Sept 2) with the average high temperature at 80 degrees or above.  Today’s average high is 79°.

Morning lows may be a little cool for most with us seeing temperatures dipping into the 40s in most places.  Highs today should hit the mid-70s.  I have us hitting 74° in Pittsburgh today. I had our high for today at 76° yesterday.

While the worst will probably have moved off by the time you read this, there is some patchy fog around and fog is expected to stick around in spots through at least the 8:00 a.m. hour. Noon temperatures today will be in the upper 60s with light winds coming in out of the east. While I am going to call today mostly sunny, some high cloud cover should be expected to move in after 5 p.m.  Clouds will be the thickest south of Pittsburgh.

I have temperatures in the 80s on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. I can’t guarantee we hit 80 on Wednesday but it will be close. Each day should feel fantastic with low humidity levels.

Our next rain chance comes late Friday into Saturday, but the chance for rain is looking VERY low right now. I am going to maintain a potential First Alert Weather Day at this time due to us watching what looks like a near miss of gulf moisture that will be sliding by.

The system, currently sitting off the Texas coast just east of Corpus Christi, TX, will remain a broad area of low pressure as it moves inland sometime today. The chance for this cluster of showers to turn into a tropical storm (depression, storm, hurricane) has now dipped to nearly 0%. Yesterday modeling data was keeping this system on track to bring us some decent rain for places south of Pittsburgh.

The track over the past 24 hours has really shifted south with the center of the system now expected to remain south of Jackson, MS, and Birmingham, AL. The eastern side of our state should still see plenty of rain from this system.  Not so much for us.

This is a big miss when it comes to rain because at this point model data is showing this being our best chance for rain over the next two weeks.

Pittsburgh weather will be cooler on Wednesday after morning rain showers

Pittsburgh weather will be cooler on Wednesday after morning rain showers

This time, the warm-up was brief. After getting off to one of the chilliest starts (tied for 2nd coldest first 3 days when it comes to daily average temperature) on record in May, we saw two above-average days over the past two days.

We won’t make it three with temperatures today cooling down behind widespread morning rain. We’ve already seen our high temperature for today, with Pittsburgh seeing a daily high of around 62 degrees. That was our midnight temperature, but sometimes they adjust it slightly up or down due to the number being sent out technically happening around 8 minutes before the top of the hour.

Temperatures will be in the 50s for the rest of the day. Skies will be mostly cloudy with variable but breezy winds of around 15mph this afternoon.

It’ll be damp and cool. You’ll certainly want long sleeves this afternoon if you are outside for any extended period of time.

When it comes to rain chances, rain will be fairly consistent through around 8 o’clock, then become more scattered for the rest of the morning.

This afternoon is looking dry for pretty much everyone. I can’t totally rule out an isolated shower in the Laurel Highlands.

After today, our next rain chance comes Friday morning with the potential for an isolated shower or storm. There will be a better chance for rain on Saturday, with rain once again confined to the morning hours.

After all of Pittsburgh area’s Smokey Bones restaurants close, what should consumers do with gift cards?

After all of Pittsburgh area’s Smokey Bones restaurants close, what should consumers do with gift cards?

All three remaining Smokey Bones locations in the Pittsburgh area have closed after the restaurant chain’s parent company filed for bankruptcy.

After the locations in Hempfield, Cranberry and at the Pittsburgh Mills in Frazer closed, people reached out to KDKA asking what to do with their unused gift cards.

Michael Litvak from Beaver County says he’s stuck with $100 worth of Smokey Bones gift cards.

“And the one in Robinson closed about, I guess it was maybe about two weeks ago, they closed it 3 weeks ago, but nothing was said when they closed that that they were closing any other locations,” Litvak said. “And then on April 28, I found out we were going to go to Smokey Bones in Cranberry with friends and our friends said, ‘hey, we just checked their site, we was gonna check the menu, and it says they’re closed.’ So I started looking around, and here they closed all their restaurants on April 28, not even letting anybody know.”

Gift cards are treated as unsecured claims in a bankruptcy. That means you’re in the back of the line, behind the banks and the landlords to get your money back, so the likelihood of recouping your money is slim to none.

What to do with Smokey Bones gift cards

If you bought the gift card with a credit card, that’s your best shot at getting money back. Contact the credit card company and ask for a chargeback for goods and services not received. But you have to ask fast. This works best if you’re only one to four months out from the purchase.

Did you get it from a third party? If you snagged the card on one of those big display sets at a Costco or grocery store, they’ll sometimes refund or exchange gift cards in special situations like this one.

If both fail, decide if it’s worth the hassle of filing a claim.

The Better Business Bureau recommends always checking with the company’s ownership. In this case, it’s FAT Brands. Right now, the BBB says the claim form and filing instructions are on FAT Brand’s website.

Even though FAT Brands owns other restaurants in the area, like Twin Peaks, they said they will not be honoring the Smokey Bones gift cards at those locations.

Civilians honored for helping Ross Township police detective while breaking up fight

Ross Township leaders honored two civilians Monday night for their actions last month helping a police detective while they were making an arrest.

Last month, police said that a detective was involved in a fight at the intersection of Columbia Avenue and Center Avenue in West View and needed help from additional officers.

While the fight was taking place, two bystanders jumped into action.

Former police officer Johnathan Ponce offered his help to the detective while Justin Gavasto got on the detective’s radio to alert dispatch of the ongoing situation.

Ponce and Gastavo were both honored Monday evening at the Ross Township Board of Commissioners meeting.

“I’m very thankful,” said Ross Township Police Department Detective Michael Orsino. “Eventually, I think you know, my partners would all have gotten there, but just the fact that it took a little bit longer because I wasn’t sure I could get out on my radio. It was great that these guys came and gave me a hand.

“Honestly, I don’t feel like I did anything special,” Gavasto said. “I really don’t. I would hope that anyone driving by and saw an officer in distress or anyone in distress would pull over to help. Help out where you can. Help those that need it. That’s really the take away I got from all this.”

Gavasto said it took him a little bit of time to find the radio that was in Det. Orsino’s police cruiser, then using the radio to identify himself as a civilian and notifying dispatch that additional backup resources were needed.

“Due to the actions of both men, including Mr. Gavasto communicating to dispatch, myself and the West View police officer were able to place the suspect under arrest without anyone suffering any serious injuries,” Det. Orsino said.
