San Francisco restaurants in NoPa hit by burglars overnight
Kung Food restaurant has been hit by burglars nine times in four years. This most recent break-in cost the small business $1,500 in glass repair.
SAN FRANCISCO – Small businesses in San Francisco NoPa neighborhood are frustrated by a number of break-ins in the last two weeks.
The damage has become a familiar sight for Kung Food restaurant on McAllister Street.
This is the ninth time in four years burglars hit the family-owned restaurant.
Surveillance video from early Monday morning shows the front glass door shattering, and a thief riffling through the register, which didn’t have much cash.
The cost to fix the storefront each time sets Kung Food back $1,500.
“We used to feel helplessness, but nowadays, it’s just hopelessness, because we don’t know when this doom loop is going to end. A lot of people feel that we don’t love San Francisco,” said owner Andy Yang.
Yang said he’s committed to the city. He has run the restaurant for nearly 10 years, and his family first moved to the area three decades ago.
“A lot of people often say why don’t you just pack it up and move out of the city, if you are sick and tired of dealing with the crime,” he said. “We have over 10 employees under our family business and everybody gotta eat. It’s not as easy as you think,” Yang said.
A block away on Divisadero and Fulton streets, the owner of Eddie’s Cafe said several burglars broke in in late July, and took off with the ATM and the cash register.
The family-run business told KTVU that thieves made off with about $3,000.
“I’m just an insignificant small business owner, who is trying to survive and provide for his family, simple as that,” Yang said. “Just a law abiding, tax paying San Francisco resident who is hoping that something is going to change.”
In December of last year, Yang aired his frustrations in a rap song that called out Mayor London Breed. After receiving backlash led by the San Francisco NAACP and community activists, Yang apologized.
“Mayor Breed and I, we are in good terms right now, after the song went viral and we had a good reconciliation,” he said.
Nearby Che Fico co-owner and chef David Nayfeld said luckily the Italian restaurant hasn’t been targeted, helped in part by its security gates.
“It’s a failure of the city, and it’s a failure of the state to protect these hardworking people who are trying to create jobs, they’re trying to create tax revenue, and I don’t point my finger at one particular person, but it is a systematic failure,” Nayfeld said.
Yang said his insurance has gone up three times in four years, so at this point, he does not report these kinds of thefts at the risk of it going up even higher.
“We are scrapping pennies, because you don’t get enough foot traffic,” he said. “$1,500 means a whole lot to us, we really have to work our butt off just to get that loss covered.”
He added that he would like to add security gates, but they are costly. He doesn’t have the estimated $14,000 to invest in that security measure.

San Francisco Supervisor Jackie Fielder to return following mental health leave
San Francisco Supervisor Jackie Fielder will resume her duties next week after taking a three-month leave of absence due to mental health.
“I’m coming clear-eyed and grounded and eager to serve in this role again,” Fielder said in a video posted to social media Tuesday.
Fielder was first elected in 2024 to serve District 9, which includes the Mission District and Bernal Heights and Portola neighborhoods. In late March of this year, her staffers announced she was taking a leave of absence to address an “acute personal health crisis” after missing a few weeks of Board of Supervisors meetings.
“I left the work that I love so much, not because I wanted to, but because my mental health demanded it, and I say that with no shame,” she said.
In the video statement, Fielder mentioned that the pressure of serving as a supervisor took a toll on her mental health.
“I’ve often felt like the weight of this district and city is on my shoulders, and I, through this leave, have had the silver lining of understanding that it never has,” she said. “I was going 100 miles an hour since early 2023 when I started the campaign for supervisor, and being a grassroots candidate is a lot of elbow grease.”
Fielder’s staff continued some of the work in her district while she was gone. She thanked her colleagues and Mayor Daniel Lurie for their support and allowing her to be excused from meetings.
Fielder will return to work Monday and appear at the June 30 board meeting. She is also expected to host listening sessions in her district through July.
“I am an example that it is possible to come back and heal,” she said. “I could not be more honored to serve and more ready to serve.”

San Francisco home with a history of squatters hits the market for $1.3 million
An abandoned house near San Francisco’s Castro neighborhood that has been popular with squatters for years is now for sale.
On Yukon Street at the edge of Kite Hill in the Eureka Valley neighborhood, the house with arched windows over the garage, including one that’s broken, is listed for $1.3 million.
Listing agent Zara Rowbotham and her brother, James, put together a promotional video highlighting the home’s fixer-upper potential.
There is no running water or power at the house. Neighbors have reported to the city that squatters relieve themselves at the top floor atrium.
“They needed a place to do it, so they had the nice manners to do it in one basket,” Rowbotham said. “Unfortunately it was an outside basket right in front of one of the neighbors’ houses.”
With the nature of San Francisco’s red-hot housing market, Rowbothom said they already have a potential buyer.
Rowbothom added the city is swirling with money right now and there are few places to buy, so properties like the one on Yukon Street – even with a history of squatters – are being snapped up quickly. Rowbothom said they’re going for millions of dollars, with people paying cash a lot of the time.
