Maine man arrested after holding woman, 2 kids hostage at Hanover campground, sheriff says
HANOVER, Maine (WMTW) -A Maine man is facing multiple charges after he was accused of holding a woman and two children hostage inside a camper for more than eight hours.
Yvon Soucy, 51, of Auburn, was arrested Tuesday morning while trying to leave the Stony Brook Campground in Hanover with one of the children he is accused of holding hostage, according to Oxford County Sheriff Christopher Wainwright.
Wainwright said Oxford County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the campground at about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday after receiving a report of a domestic violence incident and potential hostage situation.
Responding deputies learned that a man, later identified as Soucy, reportedly assaulted a woman and had been confining her and two children, ages 6 and 8, inside of a camper since late Monday night, Wainwright said.
The woman told deputies that Soucy began exhibiting concerning behavior on Monday and had made suicidal statements to her. The woman then reported that she and Soucy had a physical altercation at about 10 p.m., which resulted in her suffering minor injuries.
According to Wainwright, the woman told deputies that Soucy refused to let her and the children leave the camper and that he was armed with a knife throughout the night.
The woman then told deputies that she and the 6-year-old were able to escape the camper at about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday and that they immediately reported the incident to someone, who then called the sheriff’s office.
Wainwright said deputies found Soucy attempting to leave the campground in a pickup truck with the 8-year-old. The deputies were able to safely detain Soucy, who eventually surrendered to them and was arrested shortly after 9:35 a.m. without further incident.
The 8-year-old child was safely recovered from the truck and was not physically injured, according to the sheriff. The 6-year-old child was also evaluated by rescue personnel at the scene.
Wainwright said the woman was transported to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway, where she was evaluated, treated for her minor injuries and released.
Deputies transported Soucy to Stephens Memorial Hospital, where he was evaluated before being transported to the Oxford County Jail.
Soucy has been charged with domestic violence aggravated assault with a weapon, domestic violence criminal threatening with a weapon, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, obstructing a report of a crime, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal restraint.
Wainwright said the case remains under investigation.

How the Good Neighbor Day of Giving telethon is impacting Maine’s communities
BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – Monday’s telethon held by WABI in partnership with Penquis and Heart of Maine United Way Monday raised money for the heating of homes, something so basic, yet so significant in a state like Maine.
Danielle Hewes, Penquis contributor and volunteer, says some people might not even know that they qualify for heating assistance.
“I think there’s this misconception that you can’t get that if you’re working. Like that’s just for people on general assistance. The truth of the matter is this is for the people that are maybe not able to work, but also for the people that are working. They’re making ends meet,” she said.
For Danielle, that’s what makes events like the telethon so special: it’s making a real difference in the community with people who need the help the most.
Speaking about Penquis in particular, she said, “You learn about all of the other things they do and how they help the community and you can’t help but want to be a part of that.”
If you weren’t able to donate Monday, donations are still being accepted.
