Authorities nab several violent criminals in US illegally, including man arrested 12 times in 8 years

ICE announced on Monday that several illegal migrants with a violent criminal history have been captured and are in custody.

Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) San Francisco reported that Syed Mohamed Tousif Mohiuddin, 39, of India, was in the U.S. illegally after overstaying his visa in 2010.

ERO San Francisco said Mohiuddin entered the United States at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport in Detroit, Michigan, on March 9, 2010, and failed to depart under the terms of his visa.

On August 19, 2013, the Fremont Police Department arrested Mohiuddin for assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism.

According to the organization, Mohiuddin was arrested 12 times in California between 2013 and 2021 for a handful of violent crimes, including battery with serious bodily injury, stalking, hit-and-run, robbery and intent to terrorize.

“This arrest demonstrates how seriously we take our commitment to safeguarding our communities from individuals like Mohiuddin,” said ERO San Francisco Field Office Director Moises Becerra. “Our officers will continue to work night and day to ensure protection and safety from those who intend to do harm.”

ICE said Mohiuddin will remain in ERO custody pending removal proceedings.

This latest arrest comes after ERO Boston announced on Monday two more illegal migrant arrests.

One arrest included a Honduran national who was wanted for murder in Honduras and other local assault charges.

ERO Boston apprehended the 23-year-old Honduran national on Feb. 27 in Providence, Rhode Island.

ICE said he was an unlawfully present fugitive being sought for homicide in Honduras who was found guilty of felony assault with a weapon and domestic violence, then released from court despite the existence of an active immigration detainer for his custody.

“It is very disturbing that, despite the serious charges this fugitive faces and the existence of an active immigration detainer filed for his custody, he was released by the court back into the community. This case only highlights the importance of why ERO Boston seeks to cooperate with local communities to protect public safety in our region,” said ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd M. Lyons.

ERO Boston stated that the Honduran national first attempted to enter the United States unlawfully in January 2021 but was expelled under the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Title 42 emergency health order. Later that year, he unlawfully entered the United States at an unknown location without being admitted, inspected or paroled by a U.S. immigration official.

ICE has confirmed that he is being sought for homicide by law enforcement authorities in the city of El Progreso in the province of Yoro, Honduras.

Officials also said a 44-year-old Colombian national and convicted sex offender was caught on Feb. 14 in East Boston. Deportation officers from ERO Boston apprehended the Colombian noncitizen who was convicted of indecent assault and battery of a person over the age of 14 in December 2022, during a nationwide law enforcement effort that netted 275 noncitizen sex offenders.

“This Colombian sex offender not only broke our immigration laws; he victimized a Massachusetts resident,” said Lyons. “We cannot allow such threats to roam the streets of our New England communities. ERO Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by arresting and removing such threats from our neighborhoods.”

U.S. Border Patrol arrested the Colombian noncitizen in August 2022, near San Luis, Arizona, served him with a notice to appear before a Department of Justice immigration judge, and released him on his own recognizance.

Police in Massachusetts apprehended him in September 2022 and charged him with indecent assault and battery on a person over 14.

He pleaded guilty in December 2022, and the court sentenced him to probation for one year.

The migrants will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.

Federal judge upholds Hawaii’s new climate change tax on cruise passengers

A federal judge’s ruling allows Hawaii’s new tourist tax, which includes a levy on cruise ship passengers, to take effect in 2026

HONOLULU — A federal judge’s ruling clears the way for Hawaii to include cruise ship passengers in a new tourist tax to help cope with climate change, a levy set to go into effect at the start of 2026.

U.S. District Judge Jill A. Otake on Tuesday denied a request seeking to stop officials from enforcing the new law on cruises.

In the nation’s first such levy to help cope with a warming planet, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green signed legislation in May that raises tax revenue to deal with eroding shorelines, wildfires and other climate problems. Officials estimate the tax will generate nearly $100 million annually.

The levy increases rates on hotel room and vacation rental stays but also imposes a new 11% tax on the gross fares paid by a cruise ship’s passengers, starting next year, prorated for the number of days the vessels are in Hawaii ports.

Cruise Lines International Association challenged the tax in a lawsuit, along with a Honolulu company that provides supplies and provisions to cruise ships and tour businesses out of Kauai and the Big Island that rely on cruise ship passengers. Among their arguments is that the new law violates the Constitution by taxing cruise ships for the privilege of entering Hawaii ports.

Plaintiff lawyers also argued that the tax would hurt tourism by making cruises more expensive. The lawsuit notes the law authorizes counties to collect an additional 3% surcharge, bringing the total to 14% of prorated fares.

“Cruise tourism generates nearly $1 billion in total economic impact for Hawai‘i and supports thousands of local jobs, and we remain focused on ensuring that success continues on a lawful, sustainable foundation,” association spokesperson Jim McCarthy said in a statement.

According to court records, plaintiffs will appeal.

Hawaii will continue to defend the law, which requires cruise operators to pay their share of transient accommodation tax to address climate change threats to the state, state Attorney General Anne Lopez said in a statement.

The U.S. government intervened in the case, calling the tax a “scheme to extort American citizens and businesses solely to benefit Hawaii” in conflict with federal law.

Gooding woman dies after three-vehicle crash on Idaho Route 46

GOODING, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — A Gooding woman died on Tuesday evening after a three-vehicle crash on Idaho Route 46.

The crash occurred at 5:45 p.m. at milepost 107, approximately 5 miles south of Gooding, according to Idaho State Police.

A juvenile heading northbound in a pickup truck crossed into oncoming traffic. The pickup sideswiped a maroon SUV driven by a 28-year-old woman from Hailey. The pickup then crashed head-on into a mid-size sedan, driven by a 25-year-old woman from Gooding and carrying a juvenile passenger.

The crash killed the Gooding woman, who died from injuries at the scene of the crash, according to ISP. She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Both juveniles and the Hailey woman were taken to the hospital, with the juveniles airlifted.

The crash blocked the highway for three hours. Law enforcement on scene diverted northbound traffic onto East 2300 South and diverted southbound traffic onto East 2100 South.

Idaho State Police is investigating the crash. The Gooding County Sheriff’s Office, Life Flight, Gooding Fire and Gooding Ambulance assisted troopers on scene.

ABC’s Montana/Montana State Semifinal Game Draws Record TV Viewership

The Montana at Montana State FCS semifinal game on ABC was the most-watched FCS playoff game on record, averaging 2.8 million viewers.

ESPN2’s Illinois State at Villanova game averaged about 400,000 viewers. The average of 1.6M viewers is the most-watched semifinals since 2009.

For comparison, last year’s FCS semifinals had two games on ABC, which draws more eyeballs than ESPN2. SDSU at NDSU on ABC averaged 1.58M viewers. South Dakota at Montana State on ABC averaged 1.37M. Last season’s title game of NDSU vs. Montana State on ESPN drew 2.41M.

This comes a week after the quarterfinal round drew its highest average audience since 2011.

Viewership for the six FCS playoff games so far on national TV is up 13% from the comparable six games on networks prior to the title game last year.
