No. 6 Arizona MBB returns home to face Oregon and close out its regular season

The No. 6 Arizona men’s basketball team makes its way back home this week to host the University of Oregon on Saturday, March 2, at noon in McKale Center. Arizona (22-6, 13-4 in Pac-12) picked up a rivalry win, completing the season sweep against ASU on Feb. 28, where the Wildcats defeated the Sun Devils in a 85-67 victory. The Wildcats will look to end its regular season in the win column against the Ducks and pick up their third consecutive win.

History vs. Oregon

The most recent matchup between Arizona and Oregon was on Jan. 27, where Arizona visited Oregon and won 87-78 in Matthew Knight Arena as Caleb Love scored a career-high 36 points that night. The Wildcats lost their very first meeting against the Ducks in 1979 with a score of 63-60 but Arizona currently leads the all-time series record at 54-36. However, Arizona is 3-7 in the past 10 encounters when facing Oregon with this Saturday being the 91st game between the two programs.

Oregon players to watch

The Ducks are led by head coach Dana Altman who achieved his 750th career win as Oregon comes off a 78-71 victory over Oregon State University on Feb. 28, in Matthew Knight Arena. Earning this win, Oregon has swept the season series against the Beavers as five Ducks scored double figures. Oregon has won three of its last five matches accumulating a season record of 19-9 overall so far but the Ducks are notably 12-2 when at home.

Center N’Faly Dante continues to improve as the Ducks leading scorer, averaging 14.8 ppg, 1.4 assists and 1.8 blocks. Dante has also grown his field goal percentage to 63.4% while additionally leading the team in rebounding, averaging 8.4 rebounds per game and picking up seven rebounds against Oregon State to add onto 11 points. The senior has collected nine turnovers in his past two games, as ball handling may look to be a priority.

Kwame Evans Jr. led Oregon to victory against Oregon State with 22 points and nine rebounds alongside three steals and one block. The forward also got to line on multiple occasions, going 9-12 on free throws against the Beavers. The six-foot-nine freshman ranks second on the team in rebounding, averaging 5.2 rebounds. Evans is also averaging 8.1 ppg and 1.2 assists.

Freshman Jackson Shelstad has already started making his impact, becoming the Ducks third leading scorer, averaging 12.2 ppg, 2.9 assists and 2.8 rebounds a game. Shelstad piled on 11 points, three assists and four rebounds in the victory against Oregon State. The guard has a season-high of eight assists collected in a matchup against California Baptist University, catapulting the Ducks to the 76-55 victory.

Arizona players to watch

Kylan Boswell was the leading scorer in the victory Arizona claimed over ASU, scoring 17 points on 7-9 of his shots for the night. Additionally, Boswell was 3-4 from beyond the arc and grabbed two rebounds as well as two assists in the same night. The guard averages 10.1 ppg, 2.4 rebounds and adds on 1.3 steals per game. Boswell remains the category leader for assists, averaging 3.6 assists per game.

Oumar Ballo has been a consistent force on the floor when it comes to offense and defense, as Ballo claimed his eighth consecutive double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and 13 rebounds against ASU. The seven-foot center was perfect on his shooting ability for the night, going 6-6 on field goals, continuing to average a double-double consisting of 13.2 ppg and 10.1 rebounds while also contributing one block per game. Ballo’s free throw percentage has grown tremendously as well, as he now shoots 63% from the line compared to the 43.5% the senior was shooting in January.

Love was one of the five Arizona players that scored in double figures over the Sun Devils as the former Tar Heel from the University of North Carolina capped off the evening with 16 points, five assists and eight rebounds. The senior guard remains the leading scorer for the Wildcats, putting up a stat line of 19.3 ppg, 3.4 assists and 5.1 rebounds while also adding on 1.2 steals per game.

Texas man wanted for child sex crimes, theft arrested in SW Oregon

CURRY COUNTY, Ore. (KPTV) – A Texas man wanted for child sex crimes was arrested in Curry County on Tuesday afternoon.

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office says Kenneth Leatherwood of Bastrop, Texas, was arrested with the help of Oregon State Police and U.S. Marshals just after 12:30 p.m.

Leatherwood, who is accused of sex-related crimes involving a child in Texas, was reportedly found camping in a heavy wooded area near Lucas Lodge in Agness.

Investigators say Leatherwood has been on the run from Curry County law enforcement since June 16 after reports that he had been seen with a stolen car in the Agness area.

Leatherwood was also believed to have stolen weapons with him.

His dog was also found and returned to the suspect’s family in good shape, according to the sheriff’s office.

Fireworks on sale in Oregon until July 6

PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – Fireworks are on sale in Oregon until July 6, but state and local rules limit where they can be used and what types are allowed.

In Portland, fireworks use and sales are banned year-round.

Fireworks are also banned on beaches and in state and national parks.

Statewide, fireworks that fly into the air, explode, act unpredictably or move more than 12 feet horizontally are illegal. Banned fireworks include sky lanterns, missiles, rockets, Roman candles, firecrackers, cherry bombs and M-80s.

Fountains, sparklers, ground spinners and smoke devices are among the fireworks allowed under state rules.

Officials said people should not call 911 to report illegal fireworks. They said reports should go to the non-emergency line for the area.

First responders said there were 263 fires across Portland during last year’s fireworks season, and 27 were caused by fireworks.

Gray whale carcass washes ashore in Gearhart on Oregon coast

GEARHART, Ore. (KATU) — Another gray whale washed up on the Oregon coast last week, this time in Gearhart, according to Seaside Aquarium.

The 41-foot-long male had been dead for months before washing up on the beach, Seaside Aquarium general manager Keith Chandler said.

He noted that there have been 19 total whale strandings or carcasses washing up on beaches just this year on the Oregon coast region.

Of those deaths, more than half were at least partially attributed to malnutrition. That could have been the cause in more strandings, however, necropsies were not performed in roughly a dozen of the 30 strandings.

Chandler said strong wind from the west this year has been contributing to why coastal towns are seeing a lot of whales and other things washing up on shore. However he also noted that many of the Grey whales washed ashore were emaciated with necropsies showing signs of malnourishment.

“The food sources have been compromised. The warmer water means the nutrients that they’re getting aren’t as good, so the whole food chain is kind of not as healthy,” Chandler said.

He pointed to the warming waters with climate change as the main reason noting that warm water plankton–Grey Whale’s main food source–is thinner and has fewer nutrients than plankton in cooler waters.

Chandler says this whale will not have a necropsy done because of its level of decomposition.

“The fresher ones, the team from Portland State [University] will come down and they’ll go in and do measurements, take samples and stuff, measurements of the internal organs. But on one this decayed, you won’t gain anything from it scientifically. And it’s just kind of a mess to do when they’re this rotten,” he said.
