Sporting Kansas City Season Preview

For the Glory KC is back with the 72nd episode of the show!

Before we get to the soccer, despite my efforts to mostly keep the podcast out of the political realm, we have to speak of the horrible tragedy at Union Station this week in Kansas City. It shouldn’t be political, but it somehow is. I realize sports are an escape for many, myself included, but I can’t sit idly by. There are time stamps below if you want to ‘stick to the soccer.’ Or if you don’t want to listen, that’s your right too.

Speaking of the soccer, we get to that, but it’s a little different this week. My co-host and wife, Sheena, is ill so I have a guest host! We talked about Sporting Kansas City playing their final preseason game and how they pulled off a 3-1 win over Atlanta United on Saturday. Plus, the resulting Peter Vermes quotes on Johnny Russell and Tim Leibold’s injuries, how they approached preseason differently and of course all the goals.

From there we preview the Sporting KC season, with a brief look back at the offseason. Then we move on to the opening day opponent, the Houston Dynamo.

Not to be left out is the news that PRO referees are going on strike and replacement refs will be used to start the MLS season.

In the Digital Crawl, we touch on the following topics:

  • Sporting KC II start preseason (and lose…)
  • As do the KC Current (and win!)
  • Updates on SKC connected folks, including Nate Bukaty, Cam Duke, Kendall McIntosh and Tyler Freeman
  • And the Messi update returns, with good and bad news for Miami

Here is a quick rundown of topics (and approximate start times):

  • A marred celebration in KC – 1:27
  • Guest Host – 9:15
  • SKC Preseason Win, Quotes and Possible Signings – 10:59
  • SKC Season Preview – 18:49
  • Houston Dynamo Preview – 30:11
  • Referees on Strike – 41:17
  • Errors and Corrections – 48:41
  • Digital Crawl – 50:05

Upcoming Schedule:

  • USWNT in the CONCACAF W Gold Cup
    • Tue, Feb 20th vs Dominican Republic @ 9:15 CST
    • Fri, Feb 23rd vs Argentina (and KC Current’s Sophie Braun) @ 9:15 PM
  • Sporting KC at Houston Dynamo – Saturday, Feb 24th @ 7:30
  • USWNT U-20s vs. Colombia – Sun, Feb 25th (Claire Hutton from KC Current is on that squad)

Completely unrelated, but our Instagram is full of nonsense lately. You should follow us. Here is a post of some really wild kit mockups. I didn’t ask for a lion (though I like the five stars over the crest)! Don’t mind the nonsensical logos and sponsors again.

Spotify took away our ads, so we turned on “Listener Support.” Don’t feel obligated, but if you have a few spare bucks and a fan of the pod, we’d appreciate your donation.

Big thanks to Splitter Conspiracy (listen to them here) for our theme music made with the permission of the KC Cauldron.

Kansas City Royals news: Should Seth Lugo throw more heaters?

Kansas City Royals news: Should Seth Lugo throw more heaters?

I’m of two minds about the Royals as spring training begins. On one hand, they look like a clear playoff contender. I love the run prevention across the board, though the depth behind the pitchers likely to be on the Opening Day roster means some health luck will be needed. The other mind is that I’m just not sold on the idea that Kansas City’s offseason moves made it any better.

I liked the additions of Matt Strahm and Alex Lange to what looks like a fully stocked bullpen. But I’m not sold on the offense being markedly different with Isaac Collins and Lane Thomas on board and Jonathan India coming back.

This puts a lot of pressure on Jac Caglianone to make significant improvement, which he is certainly capable of doing. Having Carter Jensen around for a full season will also help. Neither of those situations is related to offseason transactions. Ultimately, I fear that too much has been pinned on the effects of moving in the fences at the K. It will help hitters and hurt pitchers — that’s just physics. But the key is whether those effects shake out in the Royals’ favor. Of that, I will believe it when I see it, so Royals fans have to hope that the math behind this bold decision proves to be spot-on.
